“The Birth-Mark” is a short story that is written by an American author Nathaniel Hawthorne. This tale deals with examining the obsession which individuals have with human perfection. The Birth-Mark was first published in the short-lived Boston magazine The Pioneer in its March 1843 issue. It was in the same month that this short story was printed in the The Pathfinder in New York and, later, collected as part of Mosses from an Old Manse in 1846.
Before discussing about the short story it is important to analyse the author. Nathaniel Hawthorne is an American novelist and a dark romantic short story writer. His works particularly focused on the history, on the concepts of morality and religion. Thus his style of writing as be identified as a gloomy theme which made use of symbols and metaphors to teach lessons. Also like most Dark Romantic style writer is also focused on the psychological impacts of the character and with great detailed efficiency illustrated themes of sin, guilt and hypocrisy. The Birth-Mark primarily focuses on discussing the psychological impact in sexual relations. This short story begins with two young newlyweds where their sweet love story turns into a nightmare when Aylmer is obsessed to remove a small birthmark on his wife’s cheeks Georgiana which according to him is restricting her from being perfectly beautiful Aylmer is portrayed as an intellectual run amok, a man whose mind has overpowered his sense of decency. He is an incredibly skilled scientist who always believes that there is no such thing which science can not cure. Hence he is sure that he would be able to come up with some potion that can fix his wife’s birthmark. This attitude is no doubt offending to his wife Georgiana because she has always been praised for this birth mark and never felt the necessity to remove it. Yet even after all these discussion Aylmer was stubborn to remove it by all means. The plot largely reveals how Aylmer hated the birth mark more than he loved Georgiana while on the other side Georgiana lobed him more than anything else. This is exactly the reason why she kept holding on to him even when he rebuked her and made her feel less beautiful for her birth mark. You can get essay editing service at myassignmenthelp.com.
Even Georgiana agreed to move with his husband Aylmer into an apartment where he had his laboratory and where he had made stunning discoveries about volcanoes to fountains to mines and other natural wonders. Then he began his research and study about the potion that would actually make the birthmark go away. Between all the experiments which Aylmer had to doing Georgiana understood that Aylmer actually had the power to either grant an eternal life and also created poison to that could instantly kill people. Aylmer showed Georgiana his cabinet of wonders. However amidst all this Georgiana realised that Aylmer has been doctoring her food or making her inhales something in the air. She also felt strange in her body and also read some of his journals in his scientific library where she realised how Aylmer always fell short of his goals that he originally set. Still she did not lose faith in Aylmer’s experiments. However Aylmer does not like Georgiana entering her laboratory as he felt that his wife was prying on him. However Georgiana never refuses to support Aylmer even when she felt extremely humiliated to understand the fact how his husband actually refused to love her because of her birth mark and always insisted on creating an ideal version of her. She also agrees to completely trust her husband on this and promises to drink whatever Aylmer will bring her. Finally Aylmer brings Georgiana a potion and says that it cannot fail. He shows her how it cures a geranium of blots. She drinks the liquid and sleeps. Aylmer watches her with tenderness but also as if he is watching scientific experiments unfold. Gradually the birthmark fades. Aminadab laughs. Georgiana wakes, sees herself in the mirror, and tells Aylmer not to feel bad about rejecting “the best the earth could offer.” Saying this she dies.
There are basically two important characters in this short story one is Aylmer and the other is his wife Georgiana. The author has shown great detailing in sketching these two characters. Apart from this there is another character that is Aminadab who is a hulking, strong and grubby man and is an assistant of Aylmer. . Though he works under Aylmer yet he is equally disgusted with Aylmer’s obsession of removing this birth mark and is quite against the practices of Aylmer. The author through this short story as used the birth mark as the symbol and the characterization of Georgiana as a portrayal of the reality that unrealistic natural perfections are actually unattainable. The author intends to address the notion of how the concept of flawlessness is impractical which the society creates and is unachievable which actually leads to the death of Georgiana. It is high time that people start accepting the way the nature has made them. These unrealistic and unattainable defined standards of beauty are extremely decisive and destructive for the mental health and wellbeing of individual. These superficial aspects should not be prioritised over the personality and the overall intellect of individuals. This is exactly what the author has tried to address in this short story and has done absolute justice to the plot by focusing on detailed characterisation. Apart from this the author has ones again dealt with dark romanticism as his theme for this short story. Altogether the plot is quite interesting yet emotional for the readers and most importantly there are multiple angels that helps the readers to understand and resonate it with themselves.
