QS Global MBA Rankings 2018 Released: Harvard on Top

blog author name

Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) Limited has released their list of top MBA institutes in the world for 2018. The list includes more than 230 business schools and universities from over 30 countries across the world. Harvard Business School (USA) has come out on top.

QS is a British company (founded in 1990) offers meticulous information about top international universities and study abroad programs to students since its inception. They have been producing MBA ranking since the early 1990s; however, they only considered a single-indicator format (employ-ability) to determine the ranks in the first few years of their operations.

Since the past few years they are employing the QS Global Employer Survey and the QS Global Academic Survey to determine the ranking of a program, and this year those two surveys have respectively gathered over 40,000 and 75,000 responses from the employers and the academics worldwide. That’s not it. QS has also pooled a large amount of information from verified school-provided statistics, an evaluation of more than 49,000 employers (including CEOs, board members, executives and entrepreneurs), and an estimation of average ROI (return-on-investment) enjoyed by the graduates.

The collected data is finally used by the people at QS to evaluate institutes across five major indicators along with several weightings. Interestingly, the employability indicator has a major influence in determining the ranking as 40 percent of the assessment is done on the basis of “employability”. The other significant indicators and weightings include entrepreneurship and alumni outcomes (15%), return on investment (20%), thought leadership (15%) and class and faculty diversity (10%).

According to the latest list, Harvard (#23 as per diversity indicator) may not be the most diverse business school in the world, but it has sealed the top spot by securing a perfect score of 100 as far as employability is concerned. Besides, the list is dominated by the established US Business Schools where 5 of them have occupied the top 10 spots in the rankings. Stanford Graduate School of Business has landed the 4th position in the list while The Wharton School, MIT Sloan School of Management and Columbia Business School have secured the 6th, 7th and 8th spot in the list, respectively.

While the US has stolen the spotlight by having the most number of business schools in the featured top 50 rankings, Canada has also made a decent contribution to the list. In fact, two Canadian business schools, Rotman School of Management (#43) and Ivey Business School (#48), have made it to the top 50 in the Global MBA rankings 2018. These Canadian business schools have performed strongly on the global stage in terms of “thought leadership” and “diversity” in the recent years.

Well, it’s not just about Northern America. Europe also has its fair share in the list of top MBA institutes. As a matter of fact, there are five European institutions in the top 10 positions of QS top MBA rankings 2018. INSEAD has secured the 2nd place on the list while its French counterpart HEC Paris has been ranked 3rd in the list. Among the other notable mentions, there are London Business School (#5), Saïd Business School (#9), and IE Business School (#10). HEC Paris has topped the global list in terms of diversity-indicator, while another European institute Imperial College Business School tops the global ranking in terms of ROI.

The Asia-Pacific region has also shown some development in the list. According to the list, the highest ranking business school from Asia-Pacific region is China Europe International Business School (CEIBS). It currently holds 28th position in the QS top MBA Rankings 2018. The Melbourne Business School (#34) and the University of Hong Kong (#38) have also performed well in the rankings.

Latin America has also made it to the top 100 MBA institutes in the world. The infrastructure of Latin American institutes might not be as sophisticated as that of the North American or European counterparts, but the region still has some world-class MBA programs to offer. Mexico’s EGADE Business School (#84) has been placed in the rankings as the highest-ranked business school in the Latin American region, while it is later joined by Costa Rica’s INCAE Business School (#94) in the list.
