Observing Fine Motor Skills in Children

Age Groups to Choose Children From

In this assignment students will be required to observe three children from various age groups (chosen from list below) for the purpose of recognizing milestone achievement and documenting a narrative observation record.

Students may have to visit other playrooms in their child care programs to complete the three observations. The three observations should be of children in different fine motor situation. In other words, the 3 children of different age groups should not all be using a spoon. Age groups from which to choose three children:

? Birth to Five Months

? 6-12 months

? 12-24 months

? 24-36 months

? 3 – 4 years

? 4 – 5 years

For each of the three children students will:

(1) Observe the child’s Physical Development - Fine Motor.

(2) Will document a narrative observation record in the Anecdotal Record Format (detailed and in objective language).

(3) The Observation record will focus on Physical Development - Fine Motor skills and students will refer to the child development milestones using the references presented in class.

(4) Students will use and hand in the attached form template to complete this narrative observation record - Anecdotal Record format
