Identity: Achieved Status/Ascribed Status - Peer Discussion Responses

Individual 1: Role of Feminism in Identity

REPLY TO 2 PEER DISCUSSIONS FOR IDENTITY- ACHIEVED STATUS/ ASCRIBED STATUS CREATED BY: Shiyan Hassan I personally feel that feminism if part of my identity. I believe that every woman is powerful and unique in every way. This represents me because it has helped me grow as a person. Without feminism a lot of us wouldn't be where we are right now. All of the women activism and movements has allowed my ancestors and I to live freely. For example, girls are allowed to wear pants and not just limited to skirts and dresses, they can pursue any form of education or career they desire and I think that is just amazing. Growing up I got to participate in sports, play games, wear any kind of clothes and do things I wanted to do. People like my mother were limited to getting married young, being forced into marriage, having to raise children young and etc. Things have changed because of influencers and activists making a stand. Something that has sparked the feminism movement is the recent USA election. Kamala Harris is the first female vice president of the United States, not only that but the first of black descent, first of Indian descent and many more. She has empowered woman all over the world and is going to set a great example. I'm proud to be a woman and always will be! Xingjun Liang The image that I choose to represent a part of my identity is a photo of my arm. From this photo, it may hard to see the color, but my skin color is yellow. Because my DNA controls my skin color, and I do not have the ability to choose or change it. Therefore, my skin color can represent my ascribed status. People can easily recognize me as an Asian by looking at my skin color and my Asian face. If I live in my own country, my identity, my skin color, would not affect me because every Chinese has yellow skin and black hair. But the situation changed after I came to Canada. That was the first time I went to a new place that not everyone has yellow skin and black hair. I still remember the day I attempted the first class in my high school, I heard my new classmates discussed me, and some called me “that Asian guy.” But after I got familiar with them, they taught me lots of things and helped me get involved in high school life. Also, they never call me that way anymore. Most Canadians are kind and friendly, but there are still some bad and unfriendly people worldwide, and there is no exception in Toronto. One day, I walked out of the Tim Horton coffee store, and then I met a guy who looked like 50 to 60 years old. He shouted at me and threatened me to get out of Canada and go back to my own country, and then he blamed us Asians for taking their jobs. I did not say anything and left him. Honestly, that really surprised me, the same appearance, but two totally different attitudes. There is no doubt that I will still meet some unfriendly people in the future because of my skin color and my Asian face. This table lists criteria and criteria group name in the first column.
