How to Critique a Pamphlet: Tips for Effective Analysis
Written Component
For this homework assignment, you are required to do the following:
- Choose one pamphlet, either from the presentation deck for Week 10 (include the number associated with the example), or one of your choosing (include URL where example spruced).
- Assess the effectiveness of the pamphlet using the “Checklist for Critiquing a Pamphlet” (see below).
- Determine the effectiveness of the pamphlet by adding up the check marks and rating the pamphlet out of ten marks. For example, if the pamphlet met all the criteria for the written component, but only scored three out of five on the design component, the pamphlet would receive an effectiveness rating of 8/10/
Written Component:
Jargon, acronyms, technical words and uncommon terms avoided. If used, terms were explained or defined
Use of short words (1 or 2 syllables), short sentences (one main idea per sentence), and short paragraphs
Lists and bullet points used to help organize and highlight information
Use of visual aids and illustrations to effectively support message
Information organized in the order that a target population will use it
- Images included that help support and/or illustrate information
- Font used is clear and easy to read and text aligned to left margin
- Headings and subheading to get target population’s attention
- Lots of white space (or the background colour of the item) evident around “chunks” of text and images and appropriate colour contrast between text and background
