Map Design Assignment for Canada's Major Cities Location and Metro Vancouver Population Distribution

Instructions

The purpose of this assignment is to allow you to apply the map design skills you have learned thus far in the semester. For this assignment, you will be creating a layout that includes two maps. One map will show the location and size of major cities across Canada. The second will show population distribution in Metro Vancouver by census tract. You will need to create a layout that incorporates these two map views as well as TALDOGS map elements. In addition, you will write a brief discussion that explains some of the decisions you made in creating your maps.InstructionsStart with the following steps.1.   Create a folder on your hard drive or USB stick for your assignment files.2.   Download MapDesignAssignment.zip.  3.   Extract the files into the folder you created.4.   Open up a blank map in ArcMap and make a connection to the folder where you extracted the files.5.   Add the following to your data frame:•Provinces.shp (This includes boundaries and labels for the provinces.)•CanadaCMAsPoints.shp (This includes point data and labels for Census Metropolitan Areas.)•CMAPop2016$ (First, click on CMAPop2016.xls and then click on CMAPop2016$. This is a table with data about the 2016 population for each CMA.)6.   Insert another data frame and add the following:•VancouverCMATracts.shp (boundaries of the census tracts in the Vancouver Census Metropolitan Area.)•VancouverCMAPop2016$ (First, click on VancouverCMATracts.xls and then on VanCMAPop2016$. This is a table with data about the 2016 population for Vancouver census tracts as well as the area of each tract in square kilometers.)•VancouverCMAMunicipalities.shp (This includes boundaries and labels for the municipalities in Greater Vancouver.)You've now added all of the data you will need. However, before you can work with it, you will need to join the information from the tables to the shapefiles. You will learn more about joins later on in the semester, but for now, follow these steps.1.   In your first data frame, right-click on the CanadaCMAsPoints layer and select "Joins and Relates" and then "Join..." a.   Where it says "What do you want to join to this layer?" select "Join attributes from a table"b.   In the next drop-down menu where it says "Choose the field in this layer that the join will be based on," select "CMAPUID." c.    In the next drop down menu, make sure "CMAPop2016$" is selected.d.   In the next drop down menu, make sure "ALT_GEO_CODE" is selected.e.   Leave the "Join Options" set to "Keep all records" and click on OK.2.   In your second data frame, right click on the VancouverCMATracts layer and select "Joins and Relates" and then "Join..."a.   Where it says "What do you want to join to this layer?" select "Join attributes from a table"b.   In the next drop down menu where it says "Choose the filed in this layer that the join will be based on" select "CTUID."c.    In the next drop down menu, make sure "VanCMAPop2016$" is selected.d.   In the next drop down menu, make sure "GeoCode" is selected.e.   Leave the "Join Options" set to "Keep all records" and click on OK.3.   Switch from "List by Source" to "List by Drawing Order" in the Table of Contents.
