Objective:
This assignment will provide an opportunity for the student to demonstrate their knowledge of the impact of colonization of Indigenous People in Canada and to reflect (as future nurses) on their commitment to the Truth & Reconciliation Commission Calls to Action.
This is a two-part assignment that explores the past, present and future of Indigenous health in Canada. You will be required to look to the past to explore systemic issues that have created the current state of Indigenous health in Canada today. You will then have an opportunity to reflect on your future role as a nurse and examine how you can be part of the solution to improve Indigenous health in Canada in the future.
You will develop a concept map of a health-related issue relevant to the indigenous population. If you are unfamiliar with Indigenous Health issues, you can review this United Nations DESA – Indigenous Affairs website, your textbook or other reputable resources you find helpful.
To develop an evidenced-informed concept map, you should first educate yourself on your topic. You will be required to review a minimum of 3 resources from scholarly peer reviewed journals, textbooks & evidenced informed websites. These resources should be listed in APA format in your reference page.
Within your concept map, be sure to address the following questions:
What is the health-related issue?
How does this health issue disproportionately affect indigenous populations, and why?
What are the social determinants of health that impact your health issue?
How has colonization and the history of Indigenous people and Canada impacted your health issue (include specifics eg: Treaties, Residential schools, Sixties Scoop etc…)?
You may include any additional information you feel is relevant to your health-related issue &/or Indigenous Health.
Review the Truth & Reconciliation Commission (TRC) Website & Calls to Action document to refresh your knowledge of the TRC and its Calls to Action (CTA).
Government of Canada – Truth & Reconciliation Website
Truth & Reconciliation Calls to Action Document
Select one of the Calls to Action related to Health (CTA#’s 18-24) and write a 2-page (double spaced) reflection. Your reflection should address the following:
Explore the meaning and intent of the Call to Action (why is it important)
How will your commitment to this Call to Action impact your nursing practice?
How will achieving this call to action impact Indigenous Health?
You must use 3 evidenced based scholarly peer reviewed journals, textbooks & evidenced informed websites. These resources should be listed in APA format in your reference page.
Your assignment will be 3 pages in length (1 page for the concept map, 2 pages for your reflection), not including your title page and reference page.
Your concept map may be created using a computer-based program, or you may draw it and upload a clear image of it. If you choose to upload an image of your concept map and it is not clear and legible, no points can be awarded for this part of the assignment.
All resources should cited within the text and be listed in the reference page at the end of your assignment. APA formatting of your citations and reference page is required. Please complete your reflection using Microsoft WORD.
