Biochemistry 2600 - Introduction to Human Nutrition Diet and Activity Assessment Assignment

Biochemistry 2600 – Introduction to Human Nutrition Diet and Activity Assessment Assignment Assignment #2: Diet and Activity Analysis Learning Outcomes 1. Understand how to track and assess daily food intake and physical activity. 2. Understand how to interpret dietary nutrients intakes and compare to requirements. 3. Understand how to translate dietary intake data to diet modifications. 4. Develop an understanding of energy balance through recording both activity (energy expenditure) and energy intake. Instructions Tools: To complete this assignment, you will need access to the Diet and Wellness Plus+ software app, offered with the textbook or to purchase separately . You can also share the app with others, but will need to share the password and create separate profiles for each student. See Announcements on Brightspace for more detailed information on how to purchase the software . Recording Food Intake and Activity : Using the Diet and Wellness Plus+ software you are to record and analyze your food intake and physical activity for three days. We will post a demo of how to navigate the App to enter your foods and activity information and generate reports. For food intake , record all the food you eat and drink for three days, one of which must be a weekend day. Be sure to record portion sizes as well as what you ate. It is important that you enter your pe rsonal profile information BEFORE you enter foods. If you do not, you will have to re -enter the foods after you create your personal profile. You will also record daily physical activity for the same three days . Please be sure to record the day, time, duration, and intensity of your activities using the criteria in the Diet and Wellness App. These activities should be anything you consider to be above and beyond normal daily ‘routine activities ’. What we mean by 'routine activities' are those basic activities that can be considered associated with BMR for the average sedentary person. So for example, we DO NOT want you to add up the times you get off the couch, the time spent watching a screen, activity associated with making your bed, making dinner, or walking to your bedroom for a nap. These activities would be captured with BMR. However, you should include all voluntary activities that normal sedentary people would not do. For example, DO include time spent studying (a lot more brain energy used than w atching a show!), time spent cleaning the house, walking the dog, raking the lawn, walking to the store for a bag of chips, or playing charades. The more the better, but try to think of these activities as 'voluntary' activities that normal sedentary peopl e would not do. Reports: In order to complete the Written Evaluation, you will first need to generate two reports from the software: 3 -Day Average and Energy Balance . These reports will sum up Biochemistry 2600 – Introduction to Human Nutrition Diet and Activity Assessment Assignment various aspects of your diet and physical activity relative to requirements and give you what you need to answer the questions in the written evaluation. For the physical activity record, remember to use the same dates as the food intake record. By using the same dates, the App will calculate energy balance automatically in the report. Written Evaluation: From the information contained in the 3 -Day Average report (under Diet & Activity Reports), you must evaluate your diet, comparing your intake relative to recommended intakes for all nutrients. (Note that your evaluation should be based on your average intake for the three days, not based on any one day’s intake ). Your intakes may be more than recommended, equal to the recommended or less than the recommended. Discuss the nutrients in your assessment that you believe differ significantly from the DRI – this could be either a very high intake or a low intake relative to the DRI. It should differ enough that you believe you need to do something about it. By i dentify ing key issues with your diet relative to the DRI , you can suggest what, specifically, you would do to correct any problems with your diet . For example , what foods need to be replaced and with what to improve different aspects of your diet. Focus on the nutrients discussed in class. From the Energy Balance report , comment whether you are in net positive or negative energy balance? (Use daily averages, not totals). Explain what would happen to your body weight if this energy surplus or deficit were to continue every day for 10 weeks. Based on the overall results of this assignment, comment on the reliability of self -collected diet and activity data. Please use Times New Roman (or similar) font, font size 12, 2 cm margins, and do not exceed the 2 -page limit for this assignment (double -spaced). Submission When you turn in your assignment it must include: 1. A PDF of the 3-Day Average report. This report will include: list of foods and amounts eaten for each day ; the percentage of recommended intakes for the 3 -day average intake; recommended intakes for your age, sex and activity level; and report from MY PLATE which will provide you with guidance for how you might change your diet. 2. A PDF of the Energy Balance r eport . 3. Your Written Evaluation of your diet and physical activity, and your suggestions for improvement/changes (either PDF or DOC files are fine) (1 -2 pages). Upload the Report s and Written Evaluation documents under Assignment 2 – Diet and Activity Analysis Due Date: 0 2 December 202 2 at 23:59 submitted via Brightspace.
