1: What Kind of Leader Am I? Complete the self-assessments below to get an idea of your preferred leadership style(s). Disclaimer: While assessment tools can provide us with some good information to work with, note that tests of this nature can be interpreted in different ways and are meant to be a snapshot of a point in time. Exercise 3-4 What is Your Leadership Style? (pp. 46-47) or Leadership Skills Test Exercise 15-3 The Big Five Personality Test (p. 362) or Big Five Personality Test a) Summarize your results and understandings from each self-assessment. - Did anything surprise you? - What did you learn about yourself? - What strength(s), area(s) for improvement, opportunities, and challenges did you identify? b) Write a short description of your personal leadership style and how effective it has been for you to date. Provide an example to support your explanation, e.g., your role in a group project at school, as a member of a team at work, a community event, family function, etc. Section 2: How Would I Develop My Leadership Skills, and Why? This course covers theories and concepts related to leadership and intercultural management. Think about your own career goals and aspirations. a) In your own words, describe three skills or qualities you personally feel are most important for an effective leader in your chosen career area, and explain why. These skills or qualities could be from the list discussed in Chapter 3 of the text or from another source. b) Discuss the kind of leader you would like to become, and explain why. c) Reflect on your learnings from this course and discuss one key takeaway that you feel will impact your development as a leader. Section 3: My Professional Learning and Development Plan A professional learning and development plan includes the leadership or career competencies that you wish to develop. Reflect on your challenges and goals and complete a professional learning and development plan for one challenge or goal (use the template below). This challenge or goal could be something you've identified when completing the self-assessments or an area of focus selected from the Key Leadership Competencies defined by Canada's Public Service leaders.
