· Choose and research a group/population in your community.

· Create a health promotion or injury prevention teaching resource addressing a health issue in your community.

· Complete an analysis paper of the teaching resource OR present your teaching resource to the class.

Instructions Teaching Resource (Required)

1. Choose a group/population in your community. Do a literature review of this group to assess and identify health promotion/injury prevention health education needs (e.g. Adolescents - substance abuse risk; Older adults -- falls risk; Indigenous -- diabetes risk; Young children -- good hand washing).

2. Choose one priority health education need to address for the target group.

3. Support this need with evidence from literature. Include the following:

o Background information: Why is this an issue?

o Current prevalence: How common is the issue? How many people are affected?

o Magnitude of the problem: What are the consequences if the issue is not addressed?

o Risk factors influencing the problem: Are there additional issues that impact the problem?

4. Using information about your target audience and the health education need, identify two teaching strategies (e.g., lecture, 1:1 instruction) for the group to address the health education need. Support your strategies with evidence from the literature

o i.e. Is there a cultural tradition of teaching in certain ways, such as oral teaching in Indigenous populations? Is there a literacy/language issue? Is there a particular medium that is better for reaching certain populations – such as doing a presentation at a school or doing an interactive activity with a children’s program?

5. Develop your own teaching resource (e.g., pamphlet/ brochure, PowerPoint presentation, poster presentation, radio/TV commercial, or web page) that supports your health education need for your target population. Note: As a distance student, you must ensure that you have some method of getting this teaching resource to your instructor. Ensure that your resource includes the following:

o Concept is appropriate for the target audience and their health education need (i.e. If you’re teaching young children about hand washing, written material might not be appropriate as they do not typically read very well. However, a puppet show or pictures posted in the bathroom might be appropriate. OR A web page may not be appropriate for a resource for homeless people or older adults due to a lack of Internet access.)

o Content is accurate and supported by your research. Cite references on the resource for any content/graphics used.

o Resource uses the teaching strategies identified to facilitate intended learning for the target audience 

o The teaching resource is grammatically correct, organized, clear, and helpful 

6. Consider how to evaluate the members of the target audience to identify whether the teaching strategies were successful (i.e. Would a pre/post-test work? Would a survey be effective? Would a return demonstration be appropriate?).
