Select a case study from the three options listed below.

Describe and analyze problem(s) presented in your case study. What is a priority problem that occurred and why?

Present solutions to the problem(s) and how they could be implemented. What would you do as the LPN in the case study and why? What could you have done to prevent this from occurring? What would you do in the future? Your solution should be written from an LPN perspective. Tie in ethics, legalities, practice standards, and/or competencies if they apply to your case study analysis.

Use a minimum of two scholarly references to support your statements (e.g. textbook, peer-reviewed journal article, reputable website, etc…)

CASE STUDY A

Misha, an RN in charge of the unit has asked Sahar, a newly graduated LPN, to start an infusion of Total Parenteral Nutrition (TPN) through Mr. Yu’s peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC). Although Mr. Yu is Sahar’s patient, she states that hanging TPN through a PICC is out of her scope of practice. Misha states “I’ll check the bag with you, but I’m too busy to hang it. Mr. Yu is your patient and if you don’t give it, it’s like abandonment of care.”

 

CASE STUDY B

A Hearing Tribunal made a finding of unprofessional conduct against member B who, while working as a community health nurse, breached her employer’s policies by inappropriately accessing health information about five individuals for personal use, or otherwise not within or for her job responsibilities. The member also crossed professional boundaries by providing the member’s personal cellphone to a patient’s family.

 

CASE STUDY C

A Hearing Tribunal made a finding of unprofessional conduct against member C who, while in charge on a long term care unit, failed to check and process new medications ordered on a resident. This resulted in multiple medication errors for five days. The member, who was experiencing serious personal health issues at the time of the incident, was uncooperative with the investigation.
