Research and Presentation on a Canadian Artist

Biography

For this assignment you will research and create a presentation on a Canadian artist. Chose an artist from the list provided at the end of this document. The presentation should be approximately six minutes in length. You will be submitting your PowerPoint slides and the transcript of your presentation. If you would like, you can record your presentation; but if this is too difficult, it is not necessary. Make sure that the text you include in both your slides and transcript is either properly paraphrased or, if you are using a direct quote, put into quotations.Your presentation should include the following slides with the headings provided. Title Begin your presentation with a slide that includes the title of your presentation, your first and last name, course code, section code. Introduction Briefly introduce the artist you will be discussing. Biography Present a brief biography of the artist’s life. Your biography should include the dates the author lived(s), where they lived, some relevant life experiences, some of the influences on the artist’s work, and any other facts in their life that are relevant to their work. Do not include too much information in this section. Examples and Description of the Artist’s Work Research and provide some examples of the artist’s work. The following are some questions you may explore: • Artists may work in one medium or in a range of different mediums (e.g., oil paint, marble, photography, etc.). What medium or mediums does the artist work in? • Does the artist have a particular style? How can this style be described? • Was the artist’s work influenced by an artistic movement or philosophy? Do not just mention the movement or philosophy. You must explain the movement (or philosophy) and how it can be seen in the artist’s work. • Has the artist’s work changed over time? If so, show examples of how the work has changed. How does this change reflect the various influences in the artist’s life? In other words, what was the inspiration, event or philosophical awareness that changed the artist’s style? You do not need to limit yourself to answering the questions listed above. Please include the information that you feel is relevant. Where Is Their Work Exhibited? Name two to three famous galleries and possibly a public space (if applicable) where the artist’s work is displayed. Why Did You Choose This Artist’s Work? What is your opinion of their work? What does it evoke for you? Conclusion Present a summary of information about the artist and their style. Give a summary of how you would describe them and their work to another person. For example, “Artist A (birth and death years) is renowned for being a landscape artist. He worked predominantly in western Canada. In his earlier work, he used a more traditional realistic style. His later work became much more abstract, and incorporated elements of cubism…” On this slide, include one or two images of the artist’s work (and the titles of these) that demonstrate what the artist is renowned for. References Include a Reference list in APA style for the presentation. Please divide the Reference list in two sections: Research and Images. Please refer to the library website to learn how to format references: https://library.senecacollege.ca/c.php?g=718641&p=5132089. PLEASE NOTE Include at least six pictures of the artist’s artwork throughout your presentation so that you provide a good overview of their work. You may use more pictures if you wish. Do not include too much text on the slides. The text on your slides should be in point form. In a real presentation, you don’t want to give too much text on the slide because the audience will find it difficult to listen to you and read the text at the same time. Most of the text for your presentation will be in your transcript. TRANSCRIPT The transcript should be a written version of what you would say if you were doing a live presentation. It should be a separate file from your PowerPoint slides. In the upper left-hand corner of the first page of your transcript, include your full name, the course code (CUL710) and section code (KAA or KBB) and date of submission. You do not need to include a cover in APA format. Please note that I plan on reading your transcript at the same time as I go through your slides. It is therefore important that, on your transcript, you include the specific slide number as well as the slide heading as a heading in the text of your transcript. For example, in the transcript you might include the following as a heading “Slide 3 – Biography” and then type what you would say about the artist’s life under this. Your transcript should include the in-text citations for the material you are presenting in the presentation (see Citation section in this assignment description). Do not include any images in the transcript. Since I plan on reading the transcript at the same time as I look at your slides, there’s no need for images in the transcript. CITATION You should use academic sources for researching and referencing your work. (Please use academic sources such as information from an art gallery, university, and encyclopedia. The Art Canada Institute may be particularly helpful: https://www.aci-iac.ca/ ). Wikipedia is fine for getting images but not for getting reliable information. For paraphrased information, I prefer you do not include in-text citations in the text on the slides as this makes it harder for the viewer to process the information while listening. However, if you are going to be taking text verbatim (word-for-word) from a source, you need to put quotes around this text and use an in-text citation on the slide. For example, if you were to include something the artist said, you would quote the text and provide an in-text citation directly on the slide. You would also include this citation in your references list. For help with how to cite properly see the “Citing Sources” tab on the Seneca Library website: Use APA to reference images: To submit electronically, go to the “Presentation” link on our course website. Click “Presentation Submission…” and follow the instructions. Make sure to submit both the PowerPoint slides of the presentation and the transcript you used to do your presentation. Late materials will result in a penalty of 5% per day, up to a maximum of five days, after which the assignment will not be accepted without valid documentation. ?
