Understanding Experimental Design and Analyzing Natural Selection in E.Coli Populations

Part 1: What’s the harm?

Part 1: What’s the harm?
You are submitting the take home message into a Google Form (on eClass). You will receive one mark for completion.
Part 2: Understanding the experimental design
Nothing to include in the assignment. Assessment for this portion is through a quiz on eClass to ensure you understand the experimental design.

Part 3: Locating peer-reviewed articles
1.Search terms and combinations (please see Lab Topic 2 Outline and Activities for details)
    Concept 1    Concept 2    Concept 3
Key term
Synonyms/ related terms
2.Search combinations tried and 3. those that lead to the article you chose:

4.Article details
Write the properly formatted reference (CSE format) for the 2 relevant peer-reviewed articles. Below each reference, provide the following information:
?What is the research question? What are the major findings and conclusion from the study?
?How will you use this source? (i.e., why is it relevant to this lab)
Type answer here

5.Write your hypothesis and prediction using the information gathered from at least one of the peer-reviewed articles above, and possibly the website you found in Part 1. Be sure to use an in-text citation for your reference(s) to indicate the source of the information you are using. You are going to be comparing the results to your hypothesis (i.e., is your hypothesis supported) in 7a below.

Part 4: Analyzing and Discussing the Data
OPTIONAL: If you would like formative feedback on how you are organizing and working with your data, feel free to submit your spreadsheet file to the “optional excel submission” on eClass. Jody will make an appointment with you to go through the file together.
6.Results section – Write a properly formatted results section that addresses the question: “if repeatedly exposed to the biocide triclosan, will E. coli populations undergo natural selection”? You will include the figure you made while doing the data analysis – be sure to put it in the appropriate location. Provide the relevant trends with appropriate reference to data and/or figure. If relevant, include some of the information that you were to think about in Part 3. Refer to relevant sections in Pechenik (Chapter 9) for reminders on how to write about results.
Type your results section here (make sure you include your self-sufficient figure!)

7.Discussion questions
a.comparison to your hypothesis – In reference to your hypothesis, what do you conclude from the above results? Support your interpretation by comparing your predictions for this experiment with the observed results. If unexpected results, provide an explanation for why – focus on biology rather than human errors.

b.Discuss how the results compare to one other experiment (one of the articles found in part 3)

c.Was resistance already present in the stock population of E. coli or was it induced as a directed response to the presence of triclosan in the environment? Support your answer using appropriate results from the experiment and relevant references. Be sure to use proper terminology (key terms) and keep teleology out of your writing.

d.Propose a logical next question that should be asked – provide some rationale for the question
