Short Answer Questions You must answer FOUR (4) of the following SIX (6) questions.

1. A friend says to you “People are poor because they’re just lazy, get a job”. As a sociology student, how would you respond to this friend?

2. A friend says to you “Half of marriages end in divorce – people are unhappier than ever!” Evaluate this statement using your knowledge of the course material.

3. Find a news article that addresses racism. Evaluate the article using your knowledge of the typologies of racism and discrimination that we discussed in class. In your answer, copy and paste the URL link to the article. If the link is not included – your answer will not be counted.

4. In light of the recent COVID 19 pandemic, elementary and high schools in BC (and elsewhere) have made the decision to deliver education remotely/online. Reflect on this decision using your knowledge of the course material and your sociological imagination.

5. Find a news article about a crime. Evaluate the crime from a classical and positivist perspective. What would a sociologist with classical assumptions say about it? What would a sociologist with positivist assumptions say about it? In your answer, copy and paste the URL link to the article. If the link is not included – your answer will not be counted.

6. Make your own question: Devise five multiple choice questions that show your knowledge of the course material. The five multiple choice questions should include the question (for example “Which of the following…”) and a selection of four possible responses (A, B, C, D). Include the correct answer. Your answer to this question will simply be a list of the five multiple choice questions that you devise. You will be evaluated on the quality of your questions and the extent to which they reflect your knowledge of the course material. As a plagiarism check - your questions MUST reflect the uniqueness of the course material in our class. FINAL ESSAY  At the start of the semester I mentioned a book called Sociology as a Life and Death Issue and explained my fondness for the title of this book as it relates to my own views about the value of thinking sociologically. For the essay portion of the exam you need to write a maximum 3 page reflection essay on the idea that sociology is a matter of life or death. Your essay should show your knowledge of the course material, critical reflection on the essay topic and basic ideas presented in the course, and ability to support your claims with logic/evidence. A well written essay will show an integrated knowledge of the course material. Please note that simply regurgitating my lectures/course content is not sufficient – I am looking for a thoughtful and critical answer to the essay question. Be concise and thoughtful in your answer.
