Task
Topic: A detail from the Story of Sinuhe
1. Read the Story of Sinuhe (Simpson, pp. 54-66). Pay close attention to how the events in the story unfold around the main character.
2. Decide what you think is the most important message or “meaning” of the story is. This should be based on your own reading of it, not someone else’s opinion. You cannot use outside sources in this essay, but you may refer to course materials (introduction and notes to the text, lecture slides or class discussion).
3. Select the detail that you consider to be of interest and/or significance for the story as a whole and carefully explain the reasons for your choice. A detail is defined as a person, god, animal, thing or place. You must choose one of these and show clearly why you did so.
4. Your essay should begin with a brief introduction to the text and what you think the significant detail is, followed by your supporting argument. You may conclude the essay by describing any difficulties you had in reading and understanding this text. Your writing must be structured with paragraphs.
5. This assignment is designed to help us evaluate your grasp of the basic technical aspects of writing. Reference to the page numbers of the textbook is sufficient. Since this is a very short essay, only brief quotations or paraphrase of the text should be used in support of your argument.
Summary: For this assignment students will describe and discuss the reading in a one-page essay. Without using any outside sources, they will construct a brief argument based on the text.
