David Herbert Lawrence is known to be one of the most prolific writers during the 20th century and he was also known for being a bold writer of his time. The famous author was born in the year 1885. The author had a history of being ill which he reflected on time and again. He started writing as a novelist under the influence of his close friend Jessie Chambers who also went on to become his intellectual companion.
His first novel “The White Peacock” came out in the year 1911. While this was his first written piece, it was not his first publication. His first publication was actually poems that came out in the year 1909 which was published in English Review. His poems had a strong influence on a number of later poets. The earlier poems by D.H. Lawrence seem to have a very strong influence on Ezra Pound. His poems mainly dwell on bringing out the beauty of nature.
Lawrence was also one of the rebellious and problematic writers of his time mainly because he brought to light topics which were only talked about in hushed tones. The writer had extremely radical views and viewed sex as the primitive subconscious and nature was regarded as the curse on modern society and their lifestyle. The writer was surrounded by controversy every now and then because of his uneven quality of writing and bold writing.
Many of his writing was even banned for the same reason like the infamous literary piece "Lady Chatterley's Lover” which had been published in the year 1928 in Italy. The graphic content within the novel and the way it addresses sexuality led to it being a band in the United States till the year 1959 when the banned was finally lifted from the novel. The same novel was also banned in Europe till the year 1960. The novels “The Rainbow” and “Women in Love” were also banned in the United Kingdom and this time the banned was because the female had the center stage in these novels. This made both these pieces highly controversial. While talking about his banned works it would be appropriate to talk about his poetry collection titled "Pansies” which came out in the year 1929 but was not given entry into England.
The personal life of Lawrence is also very well intertwined with his literary works. D.H. Lawrence published his first-ever play in the year 1912 which was titled, "The Daughter-in-Law”. This was also the time when he had run away with Frieda von Richthofen.
He also published his very first volume of poems during the same time which was titled “Love Poems and Others”. The very next year he came out with yet another novel which was his third novel which was titled, "Sons and Lovers” and this novel was somewhat in the autobiographical style and it was the story of a young individual who tried to rise above his poor position with the town of mining. This novel brought a great amount of fame, money and reputation to D.H Lawrence and it is also considered as the very first masterpiece by the author and the novel successfully enlisted itself among the most acclaimed novels in the 20th century.
He then went on to publish one of his banned novels, “The Rainbow” which was sexually explicit and much ahead of its time. This novel had come out in the year 1915 but before that came out “The Prussian Officer” which was a collection of short stories and came out in the year 1914. This was also the year when Lawrence married his lady love. After the banning of his novel and because of being stuck due to World War I Lawrence and his wife settled down in Cornwall for some time but unfortunately, they were banned from this place as well. While the author along with his wife kept shifting from one place to another, he never stopped writing and published four volumes of poetry respectively. They are “Amores” that came out in the year 1916, “Look! We Have Come Through! “ which was published in the year 1919, “New Poems” which made its way in the year 1918 and finally “Bay: A Book of Poems” which was also published in the year 1919. In the year 1920, he revised and published his work "Women in Love” which according to him was the second part of “The Rainbow”. While Lawrence switched between Mexico and New York, he wrote a number of pieces like “Boy in the Bush” which came out in the year 1924, a collection of stories about the continents in America, “St. Mawr” that came out in the year 1925 and “The Plumed Serpent” that came out in the year 1926.
Lawrence suffered from tuberculosis for a long time and it was after he was struck with tuberculosis that he wrote his "Lady Chatterley’s Lover”. His last works included the “Apocalypse” and “Last Poems” which were mostly a criticism of the western religions. These were published in the year 1930. Lawrence finally died in the same year at a very young age of 44 years. While the lifespan of Lawrence was very small, he spent most of his life writing. He was a prolific writer but most of his works were highly controversial and this is why he was condemned for being a man who was both crude and highly addicted to sex. However, in the current year, he is placed alongside writers like James Joyce and Virginia Woolf. All of these writers were much ahead of their time and are also regarded as modernist writers of the English language.
Lawrence was a man who was well aware of linguistics and the power it holds. He was also aware of a range of subjects and genres which is why he tried his hands in writing novels, poems, stories, and even stage plays. One aspect that set him apart from the other writers was the way he dealt with female sexuality. All of these together made D.H Lawrence one of the most prolific writers of the 20th century.
