INTRODUCTION

Pericles was the popular name during the 495-429 BC, who was the famous Greek statesman and general of the city of “Athens” in the era of golden age. Pericles was prominent, influential person who many at time participated in the Athenian politics as well. He was considered as the greatest leader during the golden age of “Athens”.  The name, “Pericles” means “someone who is surrounded by glory”.

BACKGROUND

  Pericles was born in a very wealthy family, he was child of an aristocrat family , his father name was Xanthippus , who was a military leader  in the battle of Mycale in the 479 BC and is still  remembered to be able to defeat the last vestiges of Xerxes’s fleet(Halsall). Due to the extreme family’s wealth and nobility he was able to pursue higher studies education, has the opportunity to get the access of the best of the teachers. He had a deep interest in politics, music, philosophy, and ethics. During the 461 BC in Athens he became the leader and kept on performing his role as a leader until the death. His family always migrated across the world over the time, the aristocrat family made several contributions for the betterment of mankind.

CAREER

 Pericles was always the leader of Athens  in the Golden age, he was also very prominent in the military areas, his career in military were very bright, he achieved fame in the battles of “Sicyon and Acarnania”, “Second Sacred War” “ Peloponnesian War” and others. During the peak of his career many historians claimed that Pericles and his allies were the reason behind the ‘Peloponnesian war’, but the allegation was lastly not proved enough to held Pericles guilty of the war.

LEADER AND COMMANDER

Pericles was amazing leader and commander as well, inspite of the hundreds of defeat , rumours , misfortunes nobody could make him befallen for his people. He still managed to convince the people, and gained his trust, as he has the ability to defend him on the saying what he is doing is under his knowledge, he always told that he immensely loved his city and not a person to be influenced by any kind of money or bribery.  His words were full of knowledge, his speech and leadership style depicted him as an authoritative leader, it is the reason of his courage and respect which made the assembly of the city to take some courage and instil the fighting spirit in them and start a fresh war with Sparta.  He always suggested that Athens can gain freedom through war and work and never allowed outside things to make him swayed away from his duties and responsibilities, he contributed his entire life into the well being of  people and their demands. He always stood before the country men and city Athens, kept on guiding the people with his knowledge and intelligence.

He always stood up for any kind of danger , proving that he was very courageous at the same time, he had that fighting spirit, loved his city very much as he was always there to preserved the dignity of the Athens.  He preferred that to undergo the hatred, become unpopular keep the eyes always focused on the goals, he taught the nation that hatred is temporary , what matters is the glory and the brilliance that will be a part of the future and slowly would lead to success.  He demonstrated that enemies should be faced with enough of courage and sacrifice needs to be done to protect the dignity of the native land. He was an extraordinary, as he had both powers to fight against the bad energies and still hold the temper to fight more in order to keep following the services of the people of the Athens.

THE ATHENIAN EMPRIE

Pericles was democrat and passionate about the freedom of Athens, he was imperialist on the fact that conquest and coercion in between the city states and people might lead to big issue or problem. He was a follower of the aggressive foreign policy; his ways to dominate the politics and managing the freedom of the city of Athens, described easily that he had imperialist power. His leadership was often criticised, as it was said that his mannerism had made the people (Athens) lazy, talkative and greedy. His leadership taught the people to allot the lands, festival –grants and the distribution of the fees to the public; his independency thought was a failure, as lot of people became attached with negative power that resulted into a massive effect of action on the public instead of being independent, Pericles came out to be the political ambassador, his words and teachings helped many people to become stress exam free.  He never liked to be defeated in front of his enemies, so he always fought with all the enthusiasm during the fight for its city , he kept on spreading the messages that people of Athens needs to believe/ accept the true conditions of themselves. He put emphasis on the factors like patriotism, knowledge and exposition skills as these few qualities will be able to make Athenians to control themselves from any persuasion/ influence.

CONCLUSION

Pericles, supported the thoughts of freedom and expressions and due to him “plastic arts” flourished during the golden era in Athens, he even used the treasures to create some remarkable architecture such as “Acropolis”, “The temple of Nike”. Due to his support the city magistrates decided to spend on the civic funds on the artistic project, Athens also developed to be the centre of philosophy and thus it attracted some great philosophers like “Protagoras”, “Socrates”, his strongly believe that the city should follow certain strategies, this helped Athens to become such a successful city. Pericles shaped the periods of Ancient history civilization; his following achievements were also remarkable and impressive.  Due to his leadership, Athens flourished and prospered so much in the areas of not only politics but also in the cultural and art sections.  His leadership were able to revoke the Athens to be the most important place for the culture, politics and naval power.
