Planning and Creating a Health Promotion Poster

Learning Outcomes Assessed

LO1: Explore different approaches, settings and levels through which health may be promoted.

LO2: Identify and assess factors that contribute to individual health and wellbeing.

LO4: Assess the need for Health Promotion within the local community and plan an appropriate Health Promotion intervention.

The first assessment will require you to plan and create a Health Promotion Poster related to a health promotion issue of your choice. You will  then be required to present your poster on the day of assessment.

The assessment will require you working individually to plan and produce an  information Health Promotion Poster. In order to address the LO’s above, you will need to consider the target group (i.e., the health issues most prominent in the local communities) and justify your choice of topic using evidence from further research.

- Include some  background/justification for your chosen topic.

- Why is this an issue? (Consider both national and local data. Some issues may even be linked to international statistics.)

- Use JSNA (Joint Strategic Needs Assessment) and other statistics to support this.

- Consider how the health issue you selected affects one’s health (short term and long-term impact).

- Consider the health promotion model and approaches you will be using to plan your intervention and get the message across.

The point of an academic poster is to gather information from taught material and your own research and present it in an easy- to-understand  way.

You need to strike a balance between the amount of information you want to get across and the limitations of getting people to understand  your point from just looking at a poster.

Keep in mind that you are being asked to produce the poster and  give a presentation, so there may be some room for more discussion around your poster on the assessment day. However, your poster still needs to include all essential information.

. Your poster should be AO or Al size (594 x 841 mm) in portrait orientation.

. You can use any tool to design the poster - MS PowerPoint or Publisher, Adobe Photoshop or InDesign are just some that could be used.

. Use statements and bullet points rather than long essay-like sentences - overall word count for your poster should be around 500 words  (excluding title, tables, figures and references on your reference list).

. Citations and references in Harvard format should be included in your poster — you may use numbered in-text referencing.

. For readability it is recommended that you use clear fonts such as Arial or Calibri and keep to at least 28pt for readability. It is advisable to  keep the same font size for all text for consistency. You can use larger font for title and headings, and smaller font for reference list.

Introduction — this is generally a section where you would present any statistical information justifying your selected topic and the need for  intervention in this area (LO4).

Impact of XXX on health — you can be creative in this section using figures, plates, tables that show how your selected topic affects human  health (consider short-term and long-term impact, comorbidities, interactions between physical and mental health) — LO2.

Treatment options/interventions — consider different treatment options/interventions available for your selected health topic, and their  effectiveness (LO1, LO4).

Support services available — give details of support services available in the local area (this can be GP surgeries, NHS trusts, charities, mental  health support services, online support services etc.) - LO1, LO4.
