Reliability Analysis on Engine
Answered

Engine

The assignment topic is Reliability Analysis on Engine.Need a new methodology, a proper Result section and evaluation of methodology.

This chapter briefly explains the current engines, its working and different types of engines. Throughout the chapter, a brief overview of various types of engines and their current situation along with the reliability Analysis of engines will be provided so that we would understand and appreciate why it is still relevant to conduct research in this technological branch. The motivation behind this study and the research direction of the project will also be clarified.

World’s transport and power sector are dependent on engines. In last few decades’ number of engines have been tremendously designed which effectively increase the fuel consumption and effect the environment due to emissions  and with the passage of time and use of vehicles, there is wear and tear in parts due to which condition of vehicle becomes more worst and efficiency of engine reduces. As a result of this, a time comes when there is failure of vehicle in a fleet operation. So, in order to avoid the failure of engine which ultimately results in failure of Vehicle,

Maintenance is very import in fleet management. In this way optimal availability of Vehicles is achieved and the total cost which is basically the sum of maintenance cost and system cost due to idle time is reduced. In most of the cases the maintenance of Vehicles is scheduled depending upon various parameters. Maintenance is scheduled on the basis of period of time, number of miles. In this project we have find out that the reliability of engines is not homogenous but depends on other covariates. When these key covariates are identified it will help to make maintenance decisions.

In this project Reliability Analysis of Engines will be done and different components of Reliability analysis including stress Analysis in different zones of the engine will be discussed,

When one form of energy is converted into Mechanical energy by using a machine, the machine designed for this purpose is known as Engine. For example, heat engine which is basically Internal Combustion engine converts heat energy which is created as a result of burning of fuel to do other work.

The mechanism of Engine is very complicated as it consists of many Internal parts. The parts of engines should always be in good engine so that engine can work properly. Even a minor fault in any engine can cause the whole engine to collapse.

Parts of Engine

The main part of the Engine is Engine block and all other parts are mounted on it with the help of bolts and nuts. Inside the Engine block the key processes such as combustion occur due to which Engine works.

As the spark plug is ignited, piston moves up and down to compress the Air fuel mixture. This reciprocating energy is then changed into rotary motion which is then transferred to the tires. Driveshaft is used for this transmission. In this way the tires spin.

On the top of block there is cylinder head, which prevent the gases to go out of the engine. Different parts of engine are being mounted on it including spark plug and valves.

For the regulation of air, fuel and removal of exhaust gases from the engine valves are used. There are two basic types of the valves. Intake valves and exhaust valves.

For the lubrication of different parts if the engine, oil is used which is placed in component of engine known as oil pan or oil sump. At the lower side of the engine, oil pan is attached and it stores all the oil. For the maintenance purpose engine is opened and all these parts are disassembled. They are cleaned and machined so that they turn back into their original condition.

Engine is basically classified into two main categories:

-Internal Combustion Engines (ICE)

-External Combustion Engines (ECE)

An internal combustion engine is so termed because it does the fuel combustion in a limited internal space. The reaction of fuel within an engine is exothermic, hence creating greatly high temperatures and pressures, which undergoes expansion and produce engine work. The key aspect of such an engine is the direct and continuous interaction of hot combustion gases with the engine both working together to produce engine work.

Spark ignition engine differs from a compression ignition engine in that it initiates the combustion of the air fuel mixture in the engine cylinder due to an external spark from a sparkplug. The other difference being that a SI engine utilizes petrol or gasoline fuel for its operation giving it the name ‘petrol engine’. These engines are installed in automobiles, motorcycles, motorboats, aircrafts and other small engines as in lawn mowers and some engine generators. High speed engines are attained in SI engines than CI, which are thermally more efficient and produce greater torques and power productions also. Spark or spark plug is used for Ignition of Air fuel mixture in SI Ignition Engine.
