Academic Skills Assessment Task: Answering Study-Related Questions

These are common study-related questions that students ask, that we will discuss on this module:

• How do I search the library online catalogue?
• How do I know if a source of information is credible?
• What reading strategies can be used when reading for academic purposes?
• How can I take useful notes in lectures?
• What does it mean to write in an academic style?
• How should an essay or report be structured?
• What is ‘academic integrity’?
• How can I use technology to study more effectively?

In this task, you are asked to answer one of the above questions, and present the answer in the form of astudent help-sheet or a narrated PowerPoint. This will allow you to demonstrate your understanding of thetopic under discussion.

• Explain what the academic skill involves
• Explain why the academic skill is important
• Give worked examples of the academic skill, where appropriate (a worked example is a step-by-step demonstration of how to perform a task)
• Be presented in a neat and attractive manner
• Be written in your own words and show clearly (through in-text citations and a reference list) where you have carried out your research.
• You should write in a formal manner using Standard English.

• Explain what the academic skill involves
• Explain why the academic skill is important
• Give worked examples of the academic skill, where appropriate (a worked example is a step-by-step demonstration of how to perform a task – you could use screen capturing software to do this.)
• It is recommended that you create a PowerPoint in which to show your worked examples. You must record your voice narrating the PowerPoint.
• Use your own words and show clearly (through in-text citations and a reference list) where you have carried out your research.
• You should aim for a formal presentation style.

It is important that you explain the academic skill in your own words. DO NOT copy information wordfor-word from any source into your submission. Provide a reference list for your help-sheet or PowerPoint showing the sources of information you have used to prepare the helpsheet or the narrated PowerPoint.
