PHIL-3999 Theories of Beauty
Formalism is one of the most influential and significant movements in modern art. It is both an artistic practice, as many modern artists were preoccupied with form; and it is a form of criticism or a theory of art, through which thinkers have understood much of modern art. In this assignment you will develop a better understanding of formalism, by looking at one of the most famous of the formalist critics: Clive Bell. Note: the Clive Bell reading, “art and significant form,” is available as a pdf in “course readings.” Part 1. Give an account of what Clive Bell means by “significant form.” Secondly, explain what kinds of work do not achieve “significant form,” and why he thinks that they are not really Art. You should cite and paraphrase him on this. But also try to put his ideas into your own words, that way you will demonstrate your own understanding. Part 2. Choose one painting discussed in one of the Gompertz chapters that have covered so far. Drawing on the reading, provide some background on the painting and analyze its style. Explain if and how the painting you analyzed fits Clive Bell’s definition of “significant form.” (Ideally, you will choose a painting that at least resonates with his ideas…)
