Group and Individual Dynamics: Exploring Multiple Intelligences, Emotional Intelligence, and Group D

For this assignment you may select one of the following three topics to further research and discuss. The final paper will be between 800 - 1200 words in length, double spaced, 12- pt. font, either Arial or Times New Roman. Your paper should cite at least two reliable sources and be presented in standard APA format. (Please refer to your Course Information Section for a sample document using this format). The purpose of this activity is to help you learn more about specific elements of Group and Individual Dynamics while reflecting on self-development and self-awareness. This assignment is worth 20% of your final grade. Due to current learning circumstances, late assignments will be accepted without penalty if you have requested additional time prior to the original due date.

Group Dynamics is defined as “a set of behavioural and psychological processes that occur within a social group or between groups. It refers to the nature of groups, the laws of their development, and their interrelationship with individuals, other groups, and larger institutions”. (Cartwright and Zander, 1968) Based on an experience working as part of a group, present how successfully this group worked toward the project goal. You should include a description of the following in your review:

  1. Dynamics of the group (leadership, participation, decision-making processes, climate, size)
  2. Dynamics of the goal (clarity of purpose, acceptability, attainability)
  3. Dynamics of the path of the goal (problem-solving strategies used, alternative solutions explored, related goals developed, ethics of decision)
  4. Summary of the overall success level achieved by the group (working relationships, working conditions)
  5. Any other details you feel applied to this situation as presented through course content (group roles, etc.)

Research the nine “Multiple Intelligences” as presented by Howard Gardner. Summarize this theory and relate how they apply to working with others. Complete the Multiple Intelligences Test provided in Module 9 and use the information to describe your individual strengths that would be of benefit to you working in a role with law enforcement.

Emotional Intelligence is defined by four attributes according to Daniel Goleman. These include the domains of:

  1. Self-Awareness (a moral compass)
  2. Self-Management (handling of emotions)
  3. Social Awareness (empathy)
  4. Relationship Management (Social Skills)

As Goleman states, “the brain shapes itself according to experiences”. Describe the relevance of this statement and discuss the importance of emotional intelligence as it applies to individual and group dynamics.

Regardless of the topic you select, use the following questions to assist in the writing of your essay. While preparing your paper you should consider the following “guiding” questions:

  1. Have you included an introduction paragraph in your paper that captures the essence of your work?
  2. Have you fully explained the key elements of your selected topic as outlined in course content?
  3. Have you supported personal-opinion statements with researched documentation? (And yes, course information may be listed as one reliable source).
  4. Have you highlighted the “theory” of your topic with practical examples applied to daily life situations?
  5. Have you connected your topic discussion with reflection on self-development / self-awareness?(You may wish to consider applying information discovered through the linked tests (leadership, multiple intelligences) to assist you.
  6. Have you commented on how your selected topic may/may not contribute to the success of group functioning?
  7. Have you summarized how presented discussion material has influenced your learning?
  8. Have you checked your work for errors in conventions to ensure accuracy and clarity?
