Part A: Case Study Questions (60 marks or 15 marks each)

Answer each of the following questions in approximately 200 words.

1. Imagine that Elena seeks advice on handling Sonny’s behaviour from Tricia. Write a dialogue between Elena and Tricia by following the guidelines about “approaches to giving advice” and “responding to advice” on pp. 184-185 of the textbook.

2. After the passing of Wallace and her youngest son, Elena sits quietly in a corner of the bedroom. Imagine that you are Elena’s friend. What would you say to Elena, who is grieving over the loss of her family? Follow the guidelines about “communicating with the grief-stricken” on pp. 162- 163.

3. What verbal messages are problematic in Elena’s communication with Sonny? Why? Apply two concepts from Chapter 5 in your answer.

4. Refer to “the channels of nonverbal messages” on pp. 125-140 of the textbook and analyze three of the nonverbal messages during Elena’s interaction with Sonny when she asked him to explain his disrespectful behaviours.
