Assignment 2: Observation and program planning for school-age children Part 1 As an educator working in a school-age program, it is crucial to recognize the components of a quality program. There are many indicators of a quality school-age program such as: Sufficient and well-trained staff An environment that fosters development A range of activities that capitalize on the children’s interests Usage of community resources Encouragement of parental interactions and involvement Places for children both to socialize with peers and to be alone (Baden et al, 1982, p.8) Etc… ***You can do this assignment by yourself or be in a group of two or three learners. You need to let your instructor know if you will be doing it in a group. All group members will receive the same grade. You will pick a video (s) and website (s) (you can pick 1 to 3 videos) listed in the content under assignment. Based on your observation, you will answer the questions below and plan a week of activities/ learning experiences for the school-age children. You will reflect on and answer the following questions: Was it a great place for school-age children? Why or why not? How does the program meet the developmental needs (physical, cognitive, social, emotional and creative) of school-age children? What would you suggest for their improvement in providing quality care for school-age children? Summarize your overall impression of the environment. Part 2 “In an emergent-curriculum based school-age program, the curriculum arises from the interests of the children and is developed with the children, who are actively involved in the process.” (Bisback & Kopf-Johnson, 2010, p.17) Understanding how cognitive, physical, emotional and social development is affected or challenged by the activities you choose in your practice is an integral component to becoming a professional. After watching the video and reading the information on the program’s website to determine the school-age children’s interests and needs, use this information and your observations to design a typical week of activities that you would prepare for the school-age children in this program. (4 activities/learning experiences, 1 per day and a PD day). PD means professional development day which means the children would be in the program all day.
