Goal Setting, Group Development, Organizational Culture, Reconciliation, and Ethical Leadership

Goal Setting and Locke and Latham’s Model

Goal setting is a motivational technique and goal achievement is critical for staff and the organization as a whole to meet performance targets. Share an example when your employer has set a goal for you. How did the goal setting impact you and your performance? How did your experience align or differ from Locke and Latham’s model ?

Think of a time when you were a member of a group that did not work very well together. Consider how the group moved through the five stages of group development as listed on page 310 of the textbook. At which stage(s) did conflict occur for the group? How could one or more of the team effectiveness strategies (Luthans, et al., 2015, 315-316) have been applied to help the group resolve the conflict(s)?

Organizational culture has six common characteristics (Luthans, et al., 2015, 57-58). Consider an organization that you know well. How did the organizational culture reflect these six characteristics? What did the organization do to maintain this culture?

Review one of the documents listed above, or a section of one, and consider something that you might do in your present role to advance reconciliation in Canada. Imagine that you have been asked to make a statement to your class about what you are going to do and why you decided on a particular activity or action. What would you say?

Consider how you might inspire others in your class, or within your circle of acquaintances, to also take a step toward actively engaging in reconciliation. What would you say to them about why it is important to participate?

Consider the videos “Ethical Leadership” Part 1 & Part 2. How would you explain why leaders have both individual ethical responsibilities and organizational ethical responsibilities?
