Annotated Bibliography on Health Studies Topics: A Guide

Selecting a Health Issue and Narrowing the Topic

Prior to beginning this assignment, students will select a health issue that they are interested in analyzing – for example, the textbook uses obesity.

This health issue will be the topic of both written assignments -- the annotated bibliography and the case study analysis. Your reading for the annotated bibliography can be broad, but it should help you to think about narrowing your topic for the case study. For example, your main topic might be obesity, but your case study might focus on obesity in rural communities or something like that. Students may select a topic from the list provided, or select a different topic (in discussion with the instructor).

Some suggested topics: • chronic pain • dementia • pregnancy and childbirth • domestic violence • exercise and movement • traditional medicine • substance abuse • injury • chronic disease • aging well • depression

For this assignment, students will create an annotated bibliography of four (4) good quality research articles, each looking at their topic from a different disciplinary approach.

Each article should be of 150 words.

To help students in selecting sources, a presentation by the KHS librarian will be posted on UR Courses. For this assignment, students are asked to provide a proper bibliographic reference for each selected article and summarize in one paragraph (in their own words) the main argument and pertinent findings of each selected article, as well as any unique perspectives that this article introduces to the body of knowledge (as represented by the other 3 articles), and the student’s own understanding of their topic of study.

Learning outcomes

• Students will begin to find and access information on health studies topics from a variety of good quality sources
• Students will assemble and synthesize multiple ideas Success indicators
• Students will identify relevant and appropriate sources for their assignment
• Students will show a good understanding of source materials and summarize clearly and coherently in their own words
• Students will connect their sources to broader themes and ideas in their topic and reflect on changes in their own understanding of this topic
