Impacts of Autonomous Vehicles and V2X on Society and Transportation Engineering

Definitions and descriptions of autonomous vehicles (AVs) and V2X (V2V and V2I)

Develop a memorandum discussing the following three deliverables.

1. Search for definitions/descriptions of autonomous vehicles (AVs) and V2X (V2V and V2I) and state the definitions/descriptions (one paragraph each). Avoid the definitions/descriptions included in the course notes (i.e., do not copy and paste any info from the course note). In addition, choose one topic from the list of topics in

2. (impact on society) and one topic from the list of topics in 3 (impact on transportation engineering) below. Provide a concise literature review that focuses on your chosen area and supports your review.

1) Impact on taxes or other legislation such as driver license and insurance policy

2) Impact on urban planning

3) Impact on creation of new types of business

4) Impact on employment – e.g., job losses and/or gains

5) Impact on hydro generation and/or wireless communication (for V2V/V2I)

3. Impact on transportation engineering

1) Impact on freight transportation and logistics (e-commerce)

2) Impact on roadway design

3) Impact on long range transportation planning

4) Impact on public transit (bus, taxi, subway, etc.)

5) Impact on car-sharing program

6) Impact on rural highways and/or intercity transportation

7) Impact on transportation related policies (enforcement, etc.) Use one of the memorandum templates shown in the following website. https://templates.office.com/en-ca/memos Develop your review as a PDF (File Name should be “Assignment01_Your Student Number”) and submit it to Moodle course website. Your document should be a “three-page” document (Use letter size paper (i.e., same size as this doc) Times New Roman font (size 11) and 1.5-line spacing).

The review should have a separate section to summarize your search results and conclusions. You may include supporting figures or tables in appendix. The figure and tables will not be considered as main section of the three-page memorandum. Note clearly that you should NOT copy and paste any sentences/paragraphs in the references. You should read and digest the meanings first and then reconstruct and rewrite your own understanding on the chosen topics in your memorandum. Cite at least three references for “Each” of Deliverable 2 and 3 above and properly cite them in the main body of your assignment (e.g., NHTSA, 2016). Provide full list of references at the end of your assignment. The page contains the list of references will NOT be counted as one of the three pages (i.e., it can be fourth page).
