Social Movement Analysis Paper

Task

1. Choose a recent social movement or “campaign” that is based on social justice/ anti-oppression/ human rights/anti-racist, socio-economic or environmental justice principles. You may consult with your professor for selecting your topic for this assignment. If you failed to select an appropriate topic, you might get Zero “0” for this assignment.

2. By “recent”, I mean you may choose any movement that began in 2005 or later. I suggest you choose something that really interests you, some suggestions to consider: Wet’s u wet’en Rail Blockades, Hong Kong 2019/2020 Protests, Idle No More, Occupy Movement, Hands Up Don't Shoot, Black Lives Matter, Arab Spring (Egypt, Tunisia, Yemen, Libya etc.) 1 billion Rising, Environmental Movements (People’s Climate March), #MeToo, Women March 2017, Umbrella Movement, Disability Rights Movements, LGBTQ activism (It Gets Better)

a) The emergence of this social movement

b) The participants in this social movement and how they were recruited

c) How this movement was organized

d) The goals of this movement

e) The tactics and strategies used in this movement

f) An analysis of the successes and challenges of this movement

g) What is happening now

h) What you learned by completing this assignment (did you more clearly understand a particular concept or idea?)

4. Use letters a-h as above for your headings for each of the topics required ie. Emergence of the Idle No More Movement, The Goals of the Idle No More Movement etc.

5. The paper should be 1000-1200 words 3-4 double spaced pages. Please cite any sources within your paper using APA format. A reference list will also be required. You can refer back to the Social Service Worker student handbook for instructions on correct APA format and you can always consult with the library or with me and there are also many on-line sources.

6. There will be a drop box set up so that you can drop your paper in. It will be graded using a rubric which is as follows:

The following rubric will be applicable if your choice a social movement/campaign as per guidelines stated in page 1, paragraph 1. If you choose a movement/campaign that is oppressive, anti-indigenous, racist, ableist, homophobic, anti-Sematic, Islamophobic, in that case the following rubric will not be applicable to assess your assignment.
