CHEM 210 Organic Chemistry

Your assignment is to choose a medium sized organic molecule that pertains to a career of interest to you, to build the molecule with materials of your choice and to describe your molecule using scientific terminology and chemical principles. Your report must include a detailed chemical description of the molecule. Your report may be submitted in almost any form (written report, slide show, video, etc.) as long as it meets the requirements. Please do not use a prezi. Upload your report onto the google classroom in the culminating assignment section.

• Describe the molecule with pictures and words. Provide details of what it is, who uses it, and why it is used. Include a history of the molecule.
• Build a model of the molecule with materials of your choosing (colored marshmallows, beads, plasticine, playdoh, toothpicks, pipe cleaners etc.). The model should show elements with a consistent color scheme.
• Describe a specific career in science related to this molecule. Include details of what someone in this career would do, who they might work for and what salary they might earn. State the education or training the career requires. Be specific about the high school courses required for an undergraduate program, the level and duration of education needed, and any degree, diploma, or certificate earned upon completion.
• Provide details on the molecule including IUPAC name, functional groups, physical characteristics (melting or boiling point), toxicity (MSDS), solubility and the hybridization of each atom in the molecule. Provide a rationale for the solubility of the molecule. Include a possible reduction or oxidation reaction with your molecule as the reactant or product.
• Present the results of your research in a neatly-typed, logically-organized format with appropriate, relevant visual aids, and making use of appropriate terminology.
• Include reference to all works cited at the end of your report in APA format.
• You may conduct research and discuss your thoughts with others, but the work and words presented for evaluation must be your own. Plagiarism will result in a mark of ZERO for the entire assignment.
