ARTH100 Introduction to Art History
Task
Brian Jungen
This essay involves a detailed summary of the article “Looking at the Masters: Brian Jungen.” After summarizing the article you will then provide a discussion of Jungen’s artwork Prototypes for a New Understanding, comparing it to Yinka Shonibare’s Mr. and Mrs. Andrews without Their Heads. A thoughtful reflection and detailed account of both artworks is required. This is NOT a research assignment and no research must appear in your writing; instead, you are demonstrating your own ability to closely read the article and thoughtfully examine both artworks.
Due: Wednesday, November 24th (15%) Upload to MyCC between 9:00 am – 4:00 pm (All assignments penalized 3% each day late)
Part A: Summary and Comment (Approx. 500 words) Include the following information:
- What information does the writer include in the first paragraph?
- Include three direct quotations made by the artist about his artwork Prototypes for a New Understanding
- How does the writer characterize Jungen’s work? What additional information does she provide?
- What does the writer discuss in the last three short concluding paragraphs? Why do you think this information is included?
- Does the writer provide her opinion on Jungen’s artwork? Explain.
Part B: Comparative Analysis (Approx. 300 words)
A comparative analysis identifies similarities and differences. This must involve both the conceptual (content) and formal aspects of the artworks. Include the concept cultural appropriation in your comparison and its significance in both artworks. Make sure to also express your viewpoint and how successfully you think these works communicate.
Criteria
- Approximately 800 words (not including Bibliography/Works Cited page)
- Written in essay form with a clear introductory paragraph, body paragraphs and a conclusion
- Identify the full title and author’s name of the article you are summarizing in the introductory paragraph
- All direct quotations must have in-text citations identifying the exact wording of the author
- Works Cited page must include your two sources (Article and course text)
- No research must appear in this essay
