Overview and Guidelines

The goals of all cases are to help you analyze a company and propose means of applying course principles for improving the company’s effectiveness in innovation and adaptability.

As you complete this assignment, imagine yourselves as a group of top-managers and middle-mangers who have been asked to spearhead an assessment of your company’s abilities in the innovation process. These being your second and third steps in that process, you have been asked to do an overall assessment and a deep assessment of the Select and Implementation phases’ capabilities.

To accomplish these item, your assignment should include and SUPPORT with strong rationale and examples the following items:

  1. Proposal of How Your Company Should Select Its Innovation
    • Identify and demonstrate a deep understanding of why you have identified the following areas as ones in which the company:
      • External needs to consider when Selecting, based on the space (Cynefin) in which it resides, its market, its customers, etc.,
      • Internal needs to consider when Selecting, based on the space (Cynefin) in which it resides, its current customers, its current capacity to change and innovate, etc. and
      • Other needs to consider as possible blind spots (i.e., areas that company does not know or would not normally be considered areas needing consideration) when Selecting;
    • Propose methods, tools and action steps the company should utilize to address the above needs and enhance their abilities in Selecting; and
    • Use at least one appropriate method, tool or technique to engage in Selection. In other words, actually use the tool to the best of your ability.
  2. Identification of Needs in Between the Select and Implement Phases
    • Identify what you as leaders need to consider, work on, address, etc. prior to moving on to the Implementation phase of the innovation process,
    • Clarify how these areas have the potential to help or hinder you in the next phase and
    • Suggest the means in which you will help the company transition itself between these phases as a company.
Assignment Requirements
  • Address the above goals of the assignment in a clearly written and well-reasoned and -supported report form (i.e., not essay format, but clear writing using headings, subheadings, etc.) that is no more than 10 pages long (not counting cover page and reference page).
  • Gather information about your company from the company’s website, the course textbook, the Building Blocks article from HBR (i.e., “Is yours a learning organization?”), andif approved in advance by the instructor, academic journal articles.
  • Cite all use of sources using APA Style (latest edition), including an effective reference list.
  • Use 12pt font with single-spacing.

NOTE: As you write the report, imagine yourself as a group of top-managers and middle-mangers who have been asked to spearhead an assessment of your company’s abilities in the innovation process. Remember that this types of change and innovation efforts usually require multi-level and multiple functional involvement.
