Social justice final project/presentation The final project will consist of a written report and presentation regarding a social justice issue present in todays society. Social justice is a concept of fair and just relations between the individual and society.

 

This is measured by the explicit and tacit terms for the distribution of wealth, opportunities for personal activity, and social privileges. In Western as well as in older Asian cultures, the concept of social justice has often referred to the process of ensuring that individuals fulfill their societal roles and receive what was their due from society.

 

In the current global grassroots movements for social justice, the emphasis has been on the breaking of barriers for social mobility, the creation of safety nets and economic justice Social justice assigns rights and duties in the institutions of society, which enables people to receive the basic benefits and burdens of cooperation.

 

The relevant institutions often include taxation, social insurance, public health, public school, public services, labor law and regulation of markets, to ensure fair distribution of wealth, and equal opportunity.

 

Interpretations that relate justice to a reciprocal relationship to society are mediated by differences in cultural traditions, some of which emphasize the individual responsibility toward society and others the equilibrium between access to power and its responsible use.

 

Hence, social justice is invoked today while reinterpreting historical figures such as Bartolomé de las Casas, in philosophical debates about differences among human beings, in efforts for gender, racial and social equality, for advocating justice for migrants, prisoners, the environment, and the physically and developmentally disabled Big idea concepts Social justice issues are interconnected.

 

Individual worldviews shape and inform our understanding of social justice issues. The causes of social injustice are complex and have lasting impacts on society. Social justice initiatives can transform individuals and systems.

You will need to choose the 10 most significant events in terms of social justice issues. Elements Required Minimum of 10 Images Title & Date of events Creative layout (it should look like a page in a magazine) Colourful, Visually Appealing Information on each event (the 5 W’s – Who, What, When, Where, Why) Connection to social justice big ideas

 

 

Presentation must be in a visual form: power point, prezi, etc As you present your slides you may use notes, cue cards, a script etc. to help explain how this event was significant to Canadian social justice issues. Please do not just stand and read off your slide.

 

 

Your written response should be 3-5 paragraphs Typed, 12 font, free of errors, and include your name, title of assignment, subject, and date Written Response should focus on your analysis of how these events influenced today society.It should briefly include a description of the event.

 

 

As your classmates present, you will be expected to complete the graphic organizer (to be handed out on the day of) to show your level of understanding and attention in terms of the presentations. This will be worth a portion of the final your grade. Please just do part 2 only.
