HIST 150 An Introduction to Canadian History
Task
This semester we studied two books:
Leila Ahmed, Women and Gender in Islam (New Haven: Yale University Press, 1992).
Kecia Ali, Sexual Ethics and Islam: Feminist Reflections on Qur’an, Hadith, and Jurisprudence (Oxford: One world, 2006).
Choose one the books and write a review essay. The review should be:
1. 1500-2000 words maximum
2. It should include:
- An introduction to the book and a brief description of the author (2.5)
- The author’s purpose (2.5)
- The book’s genre and style (2.5)
- Summary of the book, chapter by chapter (2.5)
- Description of the book’s main themes and topics (2.5)
- A critical appraisal of the book (5)
- Clearly restating what the author’s overall purpose is in writing the book (i.e., what is the author arguing / seeking to achieve with the book? (2.5)
- Evaluation how well the author accomplishes this purpose (2.5)
- An explanation of how the book contributes to contemporary Islamic discourse (2.5)
- Limitations or drawbacks (2.5)
The review should judiciously include some (but not too many) quotations, which must be cited using page numbers in brackets at the end of the sentence but before the period. (2.5)
Technical Requirements.
- The paper should 1500-2000 words maximum in length, double-spaced
- Write a subtitle for each required point
- Use APA citation and font (12) Times Roman
