Download the Primate Lab exercise sheet and 7 .pdfs. In face-to-face classes students are usually finished the lab in 1 hour to 1.25 hours. This is how much time I expect you to spend on the lab; no more than 1.5 hours.
You may work on the lab individually or in groups, but each person hands in their own file.
Do not copy and paste from the Internet if you find an answer somewhere. I encourage you to look on the Internet or texts for answers, but explanations should be in your own words, or it is considered plagiarism (academic dishonesty). You need to give the person who wrote the ideas credit. I will be looking for plagiarism and whether one person let another person copy answers from them.
Fill in answers to ALL questions. . Typewritten assignments only. Make sure that you do not write the answers to a chart and then forget to answer the question about that chart. For every question you do not attempt to answer, you will lose marks.
Some questions have hints in bold font. Do not ignore helpful hints.
You do not need to work through the exercise sheet sequentially; in other words, start at question 1 and work to question 8. You will find it easier to read all the questions first, then fill in the answers to different questions as you work your way through the .pdfs I created for the primate divisions (7 altogether).
Species to study for lab:
Lemur catta (Ring-Tail Lemur)
Loris tardigigradus (Slender Loris)
Tarsius syrichta (Tarsier)
Papio anubis (Olive Baboon)
Macaca mulatta (Rhesus Macaque)
Papio sphinx (Mandrill Baboon)
Callithrix pygmaea (Pygmy Marmoset)
Aotus trivirgatus (Owl Monkey)
Alouatta caraya (Black Howler Monkey)
Ateles paniscus (Black Spider Monkey)
Hylobates syndactylus (Siamang)
Pongo pygmaeus pygmaeus (Sumatran Orangutan)
Pan troglodytes (Common Chimp)
Pan paniscus (Pygmy Chimp (Bonobo)
Gorilla gorilla gorilla (Western Lowland Gorilla)
Homo sapiens (Humans)
Question 1 – You may write the common name or species name in each column. Refer to list above to know that you have all species listed for this question. Do not write males and females as separate entries in the chart. They belong to the same species.
Question 2 – Read hint. You should be able to answer this question without looking at the skulls. We studied the nose styles of the primate divisions last week, so you can look in your notes, or the Schoenberg and Welker texts. You may write the common name or species name in each column.
Question 3 – Listen to lecture 2 about primate behaviour before doing this question. I do not want a list of every food the species eats. I want to know which major diet type the species is.
Question 4 – Look at gorillas only.
Question 5 – Make sure you answer the questions, not just fill in the chart.
Question 6 – Look at the hint and find their body size, then do math. Divide male by female and figure out the percentage.
Question 7 – Note that natural selection and sexual selection are two different processes. They compete with one another. What is the effect on the male of these species. This question is best answered by looking at the canine sizes of the male and female mandrills.
Question 8 – Read the hint and study the brain contour (outside edges) of human brain in comparison to other primates.
