An annotated bibliography is a list of books, articles, documents, films/videos, interviews, and other academic sources that you will use in your essay assignment. In addition to listing each of the sources, you include your own descriptive and evaluative comments. The list of sources must follow appropriate style guidelines (in this case, APA Style), and be organized in alphabetical order. (Note: Bibliography means “list of sources” and Annotations are comments.) How should you format your Annotated Bibliography? Each entry consists of two components: A) the Citation and B) the Annotation. What is a Citation? Each citation contains the author’s name, year published, title of the article or book, and name and city of the publishing company. If it is a journal article, you must include the name of the journal as well as the volume and page numbers. Arrange your citations in alphabetical order and make sure each citation is followed by an annotation, using APA Style What is an Annotation? Brief summary, in your own words, of the relevant ideas in the source that prompted you to choose it. 2) The source’s strengths: How, specifically, will it help you make one or more of the arguments in your essay? 3) Identify the academic discipline of the author (i.e. history, psychology, anthropology, sociology, criminology, healthcare, education, etc.) 4) Briefly discuss the author’s research methodology: Was the author living at the time of the subjects s/he is writing about? What documents, materials and oral testimonies did s/he have access to? Did the author directly observe his/her research subjects? Were interviews conducted? Has the author drawn upon a body of already established research about his/her topic? 5) If you wish, you may also discuss the author’s thesis and conclusions, and whether you agree with them.
