Creating a Wiki Summary on Evidence-based Strategies for Supporting Young People and Families with M

About the Assignment

Practically speaking, a wiki is a shared online document or workspace for multiple contributors. Technically, it is a website—but its use doesn’t require any special skills. Editing a wiki is as easy as editing any regular document.” – Kent State University  For this assignment, you will work in small groups over the course of the semester to create a wiki that summarizes the key concepts and information from the assigned readings and resources.

1. For this assignment, you will work in a small group. On Moodle, you will create a wiki that summarizes and organizes the key learning from the assigned course readings and resources into four sections.
2. Your wiki must include the following four sections:
a. Evidence-based strategies for understanding and supporting young people and families with mental health concerns (make a list of the strategies you are learning about in your readings and include a brief write up of each strategy including information like how it works and what evidence there is to support it).
b. Outline the impact of personal values and beliefs about mental health and addictions on work with young people and families. Give examples and citations from the readings.
c. Explain the connection between social contexts and addictions and mental health. Give examples and citations from the readings.
d. Evidence-based strategies for understanding and supporting young people and families affected by substance use (make a list of the strategies you are learning about in your readings and include a brief write up of each strategy including information like how it works and what evidence there is to support it).

3. In each section, you will summarize information and key concepts from the assigned course readings and resources and organize it under the four section headings. The goal of

This assignment is to help you break down the information from the assigned readings and organize it in groupings that represent different aspects of practice.
4. Individually, while you read the assigned course materials (textbooks and articles), make notes of concepts or ideas and quotations that seem important to you. You might also take notes on terminology you think is important to know, examples that relate to child and youth care, or questions you are left wondering about while reading. Make a note of which concepts belong in each of the four sections as you read.
5. As a group, decide what information from each person’s notes is critical and include it in your wiki under the appropriate section. If multiple people in your group have identified the same ideas or quotes, this is a great sign that they are important concepts and you should include them in your wiki. Some information may appear in multiple sections.
6. In addition to your notes, you may include images, videos, and links in your wiki, as well as quotations (properly cited in APA style) that emphasize the central themes of each assigned reading. You may wish to use videos, current events, podcasts, and other media to enhance your wiki and creatively demonstrate your understanding of the course concepts. For example, you may find videos of a well known expert explaining a particular intervention or theory and embed them in your wiki, or you may include a sample current event article from local news outlet on the topic of mental health or addictions policy and provide commentary supported by evidence from the course readings to demonstrate how you see the course content applied to a real life example.
7. Information can be in point form or full paragraphs.
8. The information you choose to include in your wiki should:
a. Provide accurate summarized information from the assigned sources. You may choose to include content from external sources to support your wiki. This may include additional videos, images, or information.
b. Be supported by evidence. Use quotations from the material or citations with the page numbers where your summaries are from in the texts.
c. Connect the concepts from the reading to previous learning and/or personal experiences.
d. Draw conclusions and interpretations between the assigned readings and child and youth care. Use examples and commentary and explain how you see the ideas and concepts from the readings connect with the field of child and youth care.

In other words, how can this reading or resource teach us important concepts for our future role as child and youth care workers?
9. You may choose to include images in this assignment, but please note this is optional. If you are using images, they must be Creative Commons or public domain, and must include appropriate citations (under each image). Do not include image citations in the reference list. Some common websites for finding images include the following:
• Pixabay (all public domain)
• Flickr (public domain and copyright)
• Google Images (public domain and copyright)
• Wikimedia Commons (public domain and various licenses)

10.  If you have little or no experience writing at a college level, the NorQuest College Library Resources for Writers may be helpful.
11.  You must follow APA formatting and citation guidelines for this essay. You can find APA citation assistance in the following (recommended) sites:
• NorQuest College Library APA 7th Edition (overview of citation and guidelines)
• OWL Purdue Online Writing Lab (for style and citation)
• Knight Cite (for generating the reference list items)
12.  This assignment is to be completed and submitted in Moodle.
13.  You will develop the wiki over the course of the semester, and there will be two due dates when you will be assessed on your work.
a. At the first due date, in Unit 3, you will be assessed on the wiki based on the assigned readings from Units 1 to 3.
b. In Unit 7, your wiki will be assessed a second time on the integration of information from the assigned readings in Units 4 to 8.
14.  Late assignments will receive a deduction of 5% per calendar day. Exceptions will be made in cases of illness (supported by appropriate medical documentation) or with prior arrangement with your instructor.
15.  Deadlines will be announced in class and on Moodle, and you should plan to begin work early in the term to avoid last-minute submissions. Consider this assignment your opportunity to integrate what you’ve learned throughout the course.
