HTT700 – Risk and Crisis Management
Answered

PART 1

You must submit a short  "statement of a problem." The purpose of thisthe assignment is to help you identify and define a research problem or issue that is related tothe class topic (risk and crisis management in hospitality and tourism) and to your personal interest (specific business sector, current issue), and that is timely and relevant to the business.

Your problem statement may lead to a research/study question(s) about the issue that should berealistic and relevant to business practice.

The most current and massive crisis that the hospitality and tourism industry is facing is the crisis that arose at the end of 2019 due to a contagious disease called the coronavirus or more widely known as COVID-19. This is an outbreak that spread throughout the whole world in less than a couple of months and ended up bringing the entire world to a sudden stop making it a state of emergency for most of the countries that were affected by it. Hotels have been the most impacted by this pandemic as they have faced massive drops in occupancy revenue as travelers are staying at home during the coronavirus outbreak. Every country and government is doing its part to try and help restrict the outbreak and to control the widespread. The World Health Organization is also dedicated towards ensuring the safety of people worldwide and is urging countries to implement a lot of precautions and measures. Even though there are ensures being taken thee still no certainty of when and how we shall recover from this outbreak as we still do not have any knowledge of a possible vaccination and we are not able to forecast the after-effects of the outbreak at the current point in time. The main question now is how to recover from the outbreak and how to function during the outbreak with such low occupancy and danger to employees at the workplace. We are not assured of a complete recovery and it is possible that a lot of people would not feel safe or comfortable going out to hotels or travel to different places unless they are assured of a completely sanitized and safe environment. Through this research assignment I look to get a better understanding of how we are dealing with the pandemic situation and what the possible recovery options are specifically for the hotels and tourism industry.

Drennan, L. T., McConnell, A., & Stark, A. (2015). Risk and crisis management in the public sector. New York: Routledge.

This is a book based on risk and crisis management in the public sector. It helps understand the hotel industry risks better and helps to form a framework to work through situations of crisis. It outlines the extreme challenges that the public sector has faced in recent years, this book responds to the challenges by helping readers gain a better understanding in the matter of key risks and to understand their capacity of recovering from the crisis.

The book is helpful for the topic as this book largely focuses on risk assessment and evaluation.

It enlists the possible environmental drivers and barriers that can affect the organization. The book was written based on the idea of managers also being the crisis managers
