Purpose of CTW Exercises

Purpose:

Critical thinking and writing (CTW) exercises are key assignments that will aid in the development of your understanding of the material and concurrently your analytical and written presentation skills. Students will provide a 1000 word written essay on the topic/discussion provided below.

 

The completed written CTW assignment will be deposited to the ‘Assignment 1’ found on blackboard. The purpose of the CTW exercise is to help you, become familiar with key content and processes covered in the first quarter of the semester and to practice your critical thinking and writing skills.

 

Communication is the cornerstone of this industry whether this is conveying information to decision makers, subordinates below you or in the workplace between co-workers.

 

Developing excellent writing skills will serve as a distinct advantage when writing future papers and ultimately report writing for employers. CTW Exercise Introduction One of topics we covered in class is that of legitimacy in general and specifically Police Legitimacy.

 

Canada follows a common law model of legitimacy – meaning that the source of legitimacy comes from the public. Currently police in Canada face unprecedented internal and external challenges, many of which are rooted in the changing context in which police operate.

 

Consider the examples in the wake of the death of George Floyd and others in the USA. The outcry for this tragedy spread to Canada further fueling the call from reform movements to push for change to the criminal justice system and policing.There are demonstrations calling for “defunding police” or “abolishing police” across Canada.

 

In the initial class discussions, we identified public safety issues and creating a TOP10 list. On that list are CJS issues like human trafficking or the response by police to people with mental health issues.

 

If “defunding police” or “abolishing police” were the new policy going forward, it could drastically change the services delivered by the police. What would that mean?

 

Assignment Question:

Based on the intersection of “defund” (or “abolish”) the police, and one or more criminal justice issues from our TOP10 list.

 

Discuss the impact this change would make to policing structure, service delivery, and society. Feel free to take a “for or against” approach to this issue.

 

Include how you are defining “defund or abolish” and the strategies, or approaches supporting your argument. There is no simple answer to this question. Try to look at the key perspectives of this issue and provide an assessment of the events backed up by your cited research.

Legitimacy of Police in Canada

 

Requirements for this CTW Exercise:

Consider the current issues of legitimacy of police in Canada. Attempt to understand the various issues and perspectives at the heart of this matter. Write a paper that presents a position on the key issues and answers the question.

 

You must support your argument! Beyond the textbook find sources that support the key aspects of your argument Don’t forget to cite your references in-text and in the reference list. Papers will 1000 words (+/- 10%) plus cover page and reference page.

 

APA 7th edition formatting applies. Formal documents are written from a neutral position and should present the summarized facts obtained. Personal pronouns should not be used; e.g. I, me, my, mine.

 

Corrupted files or documents that cannot be opened will receive a note in the comment box or an email, requesting resubmission by a specified date. If the document is not returned by the assigned due date or if the file remains corrupted a mark of 0 will be given.
