The ability to understand and examine cause-and-effect is a beneficial skill that you will take forward with you into your career.
This cause-and-effect essay is a personal response and can include your own personal opinions, reactions, examples, and observations. You may use personal pronouns in your essay, but do not rely heavily on them (avoid ‘I think that’ or ‘I believe that’ etc.). Remember to avoid using unclear pronouns (e.g. you, we, our). Clarify your meaning and be specific.
For this essay, you have access to three news article sources for you to use as supporting evidence. You must use at least two of the given sources, or you may choose to use all of the sources. A minimum of two citations (either direct quotes or paraphrases) is required.
Some of the links provided will prompt you to log into Seneca’s library webpage using your Seneca issued credentials. In the event that the links provided below do not work, search for the title and author of the article though a Google search or on Seneca’s library web page.
You must carefully construct your essay with a strong structure – it is very easy to get off track with a response paper! Remember to include all the main components of a strong essay (thesis statement, topic sentences, supporting evidence, and conclusion).
The final essay should be written in full sentences, should have a full introductory paragraph, a few body paragraphs (3-5) and a concluding paragraph. Refer to the slides posted for academic writing as a refresher. Ensure you include a reference section at the end of your essay in which you cite all the references you have made in your essay. Strive to paraphrase sections of the articles you have chosen, and rely sparsely on direct quotations. Submit in the assignments tab, under the final essay assignment.
