Assignment on the Development of a Project Scope Baseline
Answered

Project Scope Statement

Assignment on the development of a project scope baseline

  1. The objective of the assignment is to develop a project baseline for a project in a real organization
  2. This assignment will be undertaken individually or by a group of 3 to 5. Members of each group should nominate a focal person to communicate with the professor.
  3. Students who opt to work as a group will have to form their own groups
  4. Please note that a student’s name can appear only in one group. If a student’s name appears in more than one group, it will be assumed that he/she do not belong to any group, and will not be graded for this assignment. That means, he/she will be given a zero mark.
  5. The members of any group are also welcome to communicate with the professor when there are special issues involved.
  6. The project scope baseline comprises three (3) main components: (a) project scope statement, (b) work breakdown structure (WBS), and (c) WBS dictionary. They are described below

1. It is the description of the project scope, major deliverables, assumption and constraints. It includes acceptance criteria (conditions for accepting the deliverables), and project exclusions.

2. Provides a baseline for evaluating request for changes or additions

3. Work not included in the scope statement and WBS should not be done

4. Provides a common understanding about scope to stakeholders

1. The deliverables identified must relate to the product of the project

2. WBS with a minimum of 4 levels (0, 1, 2 & 3), and at least 10 work packages found in more than one level. For example: 6 work packages in Level 3 and 2 work packages in Level 2 or 6 work packages level 3 and 2 packages in Level 3. (Work package is a deliverable at the lowest level of the WBS with a unique identifier which provides for the hierarchical summation of costs and schedule and resource information and form a code of accounts, and a part of a control account)

3. Students are advised to develop indentured WBS and not graphical WBS

4. Each work package should be defined in enough detail to estimate its costs and schedule

5. All WBS elements must be appropriately coded for identification

6. Identify all work packages in your WBS, and indicate in your graphical or tabular format of the WBS.

(WBS Dictionary is a document that provides detailed deliverables, activity, and scheduling information about each component in the WBS. It includes information on responsible organization of the work package, estimated cost and schedule, contracts if outsourced, specific quality requirements, technical and performance requirements, etc.)

You may select the project from the list of WB projects provided in the eCentennial or any other project of your choice. Whatever project selected, the WBS created must be product based and not project based. If you are using the template provided earlier please ensure that you choose the product-based format and not copying everything found in the template. This has been clearly explained in class on Wednesday October 30, 2019.

8. Templates and Examples of Scope Baseline components are provided in eCentennial section. Students may clarify doubts in-class.
