Preparing for Employment: Professional Profile, Career Goals, Job Advertisement, Cover Letter, and R

Purpose

The purpose of this assignment is to assist you in preparing for obtaining employment upon graduation. The assignment will be marked out of 40 marks and will account for 20 % of your final grade.

The Professional Profile is a tool that helps you to identify, collect, and reflect upon and value your experiences, learning, and accomplishments. It helps you gain a greater understanding of how you are developing as a professional and provides you with a system for identifying your
goals for future learning and development. It also gives a place to collect documents that reflect your activities and accomplishments.

Section A- Career Goals
Career Goals - allow your potential employer to envision where it is that you wish to be in the future concerning your career. In a brief statement, create a professional goal statement for your practice in two years (short term) and five years (long term). You should add a statement regarding how you plan to achieve each of your goals. Use the acronym SMART to assist you and ensure your goals are specific, measureable, attainable, relevant, and time bound.

Consider the following:

• Where do I see myself when I graduate?

• What kind of nurse do I want to be?

• What will be my area of practice?

For example: 5 Year Goal (Long Term Goal)
To be in an NP position within an emergency department which utilizes all of my advance practice skills. I will begin my career as an NP on a medical surgical unit and take advanced assessment, EKG, and ACLS courses to prepare me for caring for critically ill patients.

Section B – Job Advertisement
A) Search the internet, newspaper, or other sources for three job advertisements for an RPN position that you might be interested in upon graduation, that you qualify for. The job advertisement can be out of town, such as GTA, London, etc. It cannot be out of province. You must meet all qualifications. For example, you cannot apply for an  Operating Room (OR) position, as you will not have the specific qualifications that are required for the position, upon graduation.

B) Analyze the elements of ONE of the job advertisement (title, qualifications, salary, job description, contact information, and describe why this job is of interest to you.

C) Review, then describe the corporation/company’s Mission, Vision, and Values and how each of them align with your own values and beliefs (from the job advertisement that you selected) (6 paragraphs or 3 pages)

D) Provide a copy of the three Job Advertisements that you would qualify for

Section C - Cover Letter
You must address the cover letter to the actual contact person, listed in the ONE selected Job Advertisement that you will be seeking employment from upon graduation. Please write your cover letter from the perspective of being recently graduated. Please provide the actual job posting within the Cover Letter. Eg. I am applying for job posting, Registered Practical Nurse

Section D – Resume
Your resume must contain the following information:

1. Contact information including full name, address, telephone number and email

2. Objective Statement.

3. Summary of Qualifications (most current first).

4. Education (most current first). In this section, include: Clinical Placement Experience: should list each clinical placement that you have had.
