• You will identify the impact of a current nursing care procedure, issue or intervention relevant in medical /surgical nursing.
• Research your topic of choice for evidence-informed practice (“best practice”) that allows optimal recovery and health promotion for an adult medical/surgical client.
• Through a review of the current nursing research, you will be expected to identify evidence informed practice for addressing the client’s nursing care needs.
• You will discuss the nursing care procedure, issue or intervention and summarize your findings, as they would apply to evidenced informed care for your client.

The case is

Client: You are caring for a client who is returning to your unit from post op recovery. He is a 75-year-old male, widowed one year ago. He has a history of hypertension, mild COPD, and GERD. He receives homecare for ADL assistance in his home. His 3 children all live more than 500 kms from him and he has no other support at home, except for a niece who visits occasionally; as he worked away from home most of his adult life and retired when he was 73. His wife was terminally ill at the time of his retirement and he therefore did not socialise much in his community. He is now your client, post op total right hip replacement which was required because he fell down his stairs in his home, 3 days earlier, going to the basement to check on the furnace. He laid on the cement floor for 2 days before he was recused. He suffered from dehydration as a result. He disclosed to the ER staff when he was admitted; he is worried about this happening again.
