Critical Analysis of Breslin et al.'s 'Workplace injury or ‘part of the job'?: Towards a gendered

Objectives of the Assignment

Objective: This assignment is intended to develop your skills in critical reading, synthesizing, and responding to academic forms of writing. Description: For this assignment, you will write a short essay that will critically analyze the following article. Breslin, F. Curtis et al. “Workplace injury or ‘part of the job’?: Towards a gendered understanding of injuries and complaints among young workers.” Social Science & Medicine 64 (2007): 782–793. I am attaching the PDF file for this article. Please kindly refer to it. The essay must synthesize, analyze, and respond to the arguments and evidence presented in the article, and answer this question: How does the article contribute to our understanding of work and labour issues? A critical article analysis is a piece of writing that summarizes, analyzes, and responds to a specific academic text. You are expected to do a close reading of the article and provide a detailed analysis of the article’s central argument, main points, evidence, and significance to our course topic. Do not simply describe the article; you must provide your own analysis of the article in relation to our course content. Your essay must have a clear thesis statement that lays out your argument about the article and how it contributes to our understanding of work and labour issues. Your paper must support your thesis by analyzing specific examples from the article. The point is to show that you understand the article and are actively engaging with it to make your own argument. As you work on your paper, I encourage you to think about the following questions. Your responses will help you come up with a thesis (central argument) for your essay. • What is this article about and how does it fit into the themes, questions, or issues that we have covered in the course? • What do you know about the author? • What is the author’s overall argument? • How does the author frame or specify the boundaries of their topic and argument? • What are the main ideas and points presented in support of this argument? • How convincing are these ideas and points? How important is this material, in your view? Has it shifted your own thinking about work and labour issues, provided new insights, new understanding? The assignment is based primarily on a careful reading of the article and your own analysis. You are not required to use additional sources other than the article.. You can use first person pronouns (“I”, “my”, etc.). Citations: All sources used in your essay must be properly cited using one of the major citation styles (APA, Chicago, MLA). Grading: You will be graded on: • your demonstrated understanding of the article; • your ability to critically analyze the article and engage with its argument/questions/problems; • the clarity of your argument; the originality of your ideas; and the quality and effectiveness of your writing. A strong essay: • has a clearly defined introduction (should not exceed one paragraph) that introduces the topic and states the thesis of the paper, e.g. “This paper argues…”/“I argue…” (Note: You don’t have to use this exact phrasing, but it can help ensure you have a thesis statement.) • provides a summary of the article (should not exceed one paragraph) • has a logical structure, i.e. each paragraph has a topic sentence and develops one point that supports the paper’s thesis • analyzes specific examples from the article to support each point • contains no spelling or grammatical errors • contains proper citations
