The Role of Gender, Religion, and Family in Canadian Society

The Impact of Gender on Occupation and Educational Outcomes

INSTRUCTIONS: For this paper, you are asked to reflect on one of the following topics and make use of theories/perspectives addressed in this course in answering your research question. This assignment will give you the opportunity to apply what you have learned to one of the topics below. For the writing assignment you will write a 3-4-page essay on ONE of the following topics and questions: 1) GENDER • How do gender roles affect people's occupation and educational outcomes in Canada today and what does it mean for social relations more broadly? Has the gender gap shrunk in the last few decades in terms of overall equality? Why or why not and how? 2) RELIGION • How does religion create conditions for social cohesion and/or reinforce social inequality and social conflict? Does religion have a place in the modern world? How would Canadian society be different if religion suddenly disappeared? 3) FAMILY • What is family and how is it important in today’s society? Or is it? Rising divorce rates, teen pregnancies and dysfunction – are we seeing the demise of the family? Yes or no and why or why not? In answering the questions, you will develop and advance a position (a thesis statement) that argues for a particular approach or viewpoint on the topic. The course has explored several sociologists and sociological concepts/theories/perspectives. In addressing the topic and question you have selected, identify a theory/concept/perspective that you believe best helps us to understand the topic and answer the questions. Remember that there are different (and often competing) explanations for these topics. Your goal is to persuade the reader that your position is the most complete or comprehensive explanation. This requires you to engage with the theory and apply it to the topic, not just summarize it. You are expected to develop and advance an argument/position on the topic that makes use of the theory/concept/perspective. FALL 2020 FORMAT • 3-4 typed, double-spaced pages (not including references & cover page), with 12-point font and 1” margins on all sides • Cover page will contain full name, student number, submission date, and paper title. • All material, including course material, must be cited properly in-text and in a reference page using APA citation format https://www.guelphhumber.ca/library/citation-styles • Papers do not need an abstract • In addition to course material (textbook & lecture material), you will use 2 scholarly sources from outside the course. These can be books, book chapters, and/or peer-reviewed journal articles. They may be theoretical or empirical works. Popular sources (like newspapers, magazines, blogs, or websites) are not scholarly sources for the purposes of this assignment. You are encouraged to make use of the library website in your search for scholarly materials https://www.guelphhumber.ca/library. A link to what it means for a source to be peer-reviewed can be found here: http://guelphhumber.libguides.com/peer_review GRADING This assignment is not merely a summary of the textbook material. Papers that simply summarize the material without providing any engagement with and application of the material will likely not receive a passing grade. Papers will be graded on: • The degree of original thinking, clarity, complexity, and insight • The quality and relevance of claims/arguments/positions • The depth/quality of your engagement and connections to course concepts, theories, and ideas • The use and relevance of outside sources to support your arguments • The organization and composition of your writing (including proper citation of material) WRITING SUPPORT There are many supports available to students when it comes to writing. https://liberalarts.humber.ca/current-students/resources/learning-resources/writing-centre.html ACADEMIC INTEGRITY Students at the University of Guelph-Humber are expected to adhere to the highest standards of behaviour and abide by the University’s policy on academic misconduct.
