Analyzing business case problems, plans, and issues requires a solid understanding and application of various theoretical concepts, constructs, and models. Let's explore some of these key theoretical concepts and how they can be applied in a critical assessment of business cases.
SWOT Analysis: SWOT stands for Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats. It is a commonly used framework for analyzing a business case. By identifying the internal strengths and weaknesses of a business, as well as the external opportunities and threats it faces, SWOT analysis helps in understanding the overall situation of the business. It enables critical assessment by identifying areas of competitive advantage and areas that need improvement.
Porter's Five Forces: Porter's Five Forces is a model that helps analyze the competitive environment of a business. It includes the forces of industry rivalry, bargaining power of suppliers, bargaining power of buyers, threat of substitutes, and threat of new entrants. By considering these forces, a business case can be critically assessed in terms of the attractiveness of the industry and the competitive position of the business within that industry.
Resource-Based View (RBV): The RBV is a theoretical concept that emphasizes the importance of a firm's unique resources and capabilities in achieving and sustaining competitive advantage. It focuses on identifying the resources and capabilities that are valuable, rare, inimitable, and non-substitutable (VRIN criteria). By applying RBV, a business case can be assessed in terms of its resource strengths and weaknesses, and how these resources can be leveraged to create and maintain a competitive advantage.
