There are two major components you need to submit in order to complete your case study: an infographic, and a two to three page written summary with additional cover and reference pages.

Part 1) Infographic Guidelines 

Using a free online infographic tool of your choice, you need to create a one-page visual representation of key facts related to your case. Your infographic must include, but is not limited to, the following five pieces of information:

 • A clearly identifiable topic and title

o Create a creative title that relates to the crime(s) your youth is charged with

 • A definition and description about the crime your youth has been charged with

 o Tip – go to the Criminal Code of Canada to find the definition of the crime

• Prevalence rates

o Provide some statistics on how often youth commit this type of crime, and other descriptive information (e.g. how many female versus male youth commit this type of crime)

• Explanations for the crime

o Considering your youth’s background, provide at least THREE (3) explanations for why they may have committed this crime

o For example, if your youth is charged with motor vehicle theft and their background includes a history of addictions, cite some research that explains why youth with addictions may commit auto theft

• Typical responses

o What kind of responses are available for this kind of crime, how can it or is it dealt with in Canada?

? You can refer to the Criminal Code sentence options but remember that these look different for youth!

 ? Reflect on whether and how often youth are incarcerated for this kind of crime, what factors need to be considered before incarceration is used, whether probation is an option and what kinds of conditions youth might face, and

o Note – this is NOT where you give YOUR specific sentence for your youth; this section just reflects on the POSSIBLE options you can consider based on past research and existing resources Tips for producing a strong infographic:

• Think of this as a one-page guide that the general public could use to understand something about a specific type of youth crime/young offender

• Keep it short and simple – provide a concise summary of key facts and do so in your own writing (don’t copy in phrasing from elsewhere, plagiarism still matters here!)

• Just like in a paper, make sure to provide citations that show where you got your information from

• Organize the material so that it flows logically and is cleanly presented – avoid clutter!

 • Use graphics and images to convey key information Once you have finished a draft of your infographic, feel free to post it in your Blackboard group for feedback from your peers.

 Part 2) Written Summary Guidelines

In addition to the more general infographic, you are required to provide a two to three (2-3) page written summary that is specific to your particular young offender case study. In your summary, you are required to do the following:

1. In one paragraph, provide an overview of key facts about the case – here you need to consider what is relevant to know about your youth. Do not just duplicate the information provided in your case study, pick out key facts that YOU identify as relevant.

o This should NOT be done in point form, you need to write up a summary paragraph.

2. In three separate paragraphs, provide a summary of three distinct potential explanations about your youth’s behaviour. Just like in a regular paper, you must cite where you are drawing these conclusions from.

o Bring in theoretical applications for this section. For example, you can draw on differential association, social bonding, low self-control or many other theoretical explanations identified in your textbook to explain how and why youth learn and participate in criminal behaviour.

o Make sure to apply these explanations to your case study by providing specific examples of the youth’s behaviour or past experiences. You need to demonstrate with these examples how and why you think this is a plausible explanation for why the youth did what they did.
