Connecting Media to Diversity and Out Groups - Lesson 10 Discussion

Goal of Discussion Four

1. Goal of Discussion Four: One of the benefits of our course is that the concepts we learn within it are apparent in the world around us. This discussion challenges you to find any form of media (e.g., picture, text, video, etc.) and connect it to the ideas in Lesson 10 that covers
Chapters 9 (Diversity) and 10 (Out groups).
2. Topic for Discussion Four: As above, the topic will depend on the media you choose. It is very likely that each group will discuss several topics across Chapters 9 and 10. Some additional things to keep in mind for this discussion include:
Provide the appropriate source information so your colleagues can view the media you have selected
If you choose to share a video, it should be a short video (e.g., 45 seconds or less) or a very specific part of a larger video (with time stamps provided)
Respect is paramount in this discussion. We all have a responsibility to mindful of the lived experiences of others in our interactions and in the content we post.
Interactions: Personal attacks toward your peers or any other individual will not be tolerated. Thoughtful critiques, based in course content rather than opinion and emotion, are welcome. Perceived personal attacks will be subject to an automatic
zero on this assignment and may be subject to further action under the NonAcademic Student Code of Conduct
Content: There are many examples of extreme, and often violent, stories against marginalized groups in history and in our current context. Please be mindful that choosing to share such media can be traumatic for others, even if it is not for you.
I am not asking you to steer clear of difficult conversations, but I am asking you not to post graphic media (e.g., violence, injury, death). Moreover, before posting, please consider how your post may impact marginalized groups – if the impact could be negative, please reconsider.
If you have any concerns about your post or the posts of others, please e-mail me as soon as possible so I can offer guidance.
