Choose ONE of the following:
1) The impact of an aging population on healthcare provision in the UK since 2009
• You are looking at the 65 and over age group.
• You need to find data* showing the change in demographic over this period.
• You are seeking at least 5 pieces of literature and/or studies which look at the impact of the aging population on healthcare.
2) The trend of small and medium enterprises in the UK since 2009
• You are looking at how small and medium enterprises have changed since 2009.
• You need to find data* showing the number of enterprises in this category over this period or the change in numbers.
• You are seeking at least 5 pieces of literature and/or studies which look at this change and what has driven/influenced it.
3) The prevalence of obesity in England since 2010
• You are looking at the obesity in England since 2010
• You need to find data* showing the trend in obesity over this period.
• You are seeking at least 5 pieces of literature and/or studies which identify factors thought to cause/contribute to obesity.
• You can narrow this down to children or adults but if so, you must address this in your introduction and/or method.
4) The impact of Information technology (IT) on the healthcare sector
• You are looking at Information Technology (generally) used in healthcare. This includes the internet, modern diagnostic tools, communication tools, medical devices etc.
• You need to find data* about the use of technology in healthcare.
• You are seeking at least 5 pieces of literature and/or studies which look at how this technology broadly or specifically has impacted on healthcare at the this change and what has driven/influenced it.
• You can narrow this down to a particular type of IT, e.g. a specific diagnostic tool, but if so, you must address this in your introduction and/or method.
Your data must come from a credible source such as gov.uk or any other official source.
2. Your Presentation
A maximum of 10 slides, to include speaker notes; below is a guide on how to break that down. You are expected to have about 1000 words in all, (about 500-600 of those in your speaker notes).
Suggested Slides:
1. Introduction to your research Topic (1 slide)
• Briefly introduce your work, setting ‘aims’ and ‘objectives’.
• Here you say what your literature review is going to do (it is not an introduction to the topic).
2. Background to the problem (1 slide)
• Give the key points of the background to your topic.
3. Review literature (6 slides)
• Give a summary of your chosen literature and your data source, about 1 slide each.
• Demonstrate you understand what the data is telling you about trends and patterns.
• Show you understand the key issues, methodology, and conclusions for all of your literature sources.
4. Research methodology (1 slides)
• Describe the ‘method’ you used to identify the literature you reviewed.
• What steps did you take to arrive at the data sources and literature, e.g. which search engines, search terms, exclusion/inclusion criteria.
5. References/Bibliography (1 slide)
• Using the AU Harvard style (See Arden Referencing Guide)
It is up to you how you present the slides, e.g. with colour/pictures etc, but you are not being assessed on your creative skills. Your slides can be limited to a few key words, and the speaker notes expand on that.
You are being assessed on your ability to follow instructions, present your material in a logical way, to identify and highlight key points of your topic and your grammar/spelling/referencing.
Your Report
In this report, for a maximum of 2000 words, you expand on the work you did for the presentation by adding more substance. Below is a guide on how to break that down.
1. Introduction to the Research Project (100 words)
• Introduce your work clearly setting out the aims and objectives of your literature review (this is not an introduction to your topic).
• Ensure your objectives are SMART.
2. Literature Review (600 words)
• Review the literature, discussing each one on it’s methodology and conclusion and by discussing any data within it.
• Narrative literature review method should apply at this stage.
3. Your methodology (400 words)
• Describe the method you used to identify (and, where appropriate, narrow down) the literature used in your review, e.g. what steps did you take to arrive at your chosen literature and data sources; which search engines, search terms, exclusion/inclusion criteria did you use and how did you assess the credibility of what you found.
4. Discussions on the data (300 words)
• Present the data in tables, charts or graphs.
• Discuss the data itself and the creditability of the data (ensure you have chosen a credible source!).
5. Findings (400 words)
• Summaries the findings of your chosen literature and draw any conclusions to those findings.
• Say what you think it means in real world situations.
• Identify areas for further research if possible.
6. Reflections on your own learning during research (200)
• Thinking back to reflect on your experience in carrying out this literature review, say what worked, what didn’t, and what would you do differently next time.
• State what you have learnt from this experience.
7. References/Bibliography
• References should be used throughout, including in text citations and a reference list and bibliography at the end of your work. Refer to the AU Harvard Referencing guide.
• References (and headings) are not included in a word count
8. Appendices
• Copy your PowerPoint into an MS WORD DOCUMENT and include as appendix.
