Project Rationale:
The project rationale sets out why you are carrying out the research and why the research is important, i.e. who will benefit from the research and how will your research make a contribution to either the current literature or industry best practice or a specific organisation or group of individuals.

Guidance:

You must complete a topic choice matrix (the outline is below and examples are on CANVAS) and submit this with your proposal. A good matrix indicates to your supervisor that you have thought about the broader context and the approach within which your research will take place.

PLEASE READ AND ENSURE YOU UNDERSTAND THE FOLLOWING:

In all dissertations that use primary research, you will need to complete and submit the Application for Ethical Clearance Form, available on CANVAS. If you carry out primary research before gaining ethical clearance the UCB will not be able to accept your work for assessment and further action may have to be taken.

In all cases it is essential that you now read the section ‘Research and Ethics: General Ethical Concerns’ in your Research Project Handbook and on CANVAS (Module 1639) The dissertation is the Masters element of your programme. It carries 60 credit weighting which is triple the weighting of your course work modules. It is a challenging and demanding module and one that sees a significant number of students not being successful. There are often a number of reasons for a student not passing the masters dissertation – but the most consistent and most common reason is poor attendance and performance at supervisory meetings. Email contact with your supervisor is fine in cases of asking a simple, straightforward question or checking on issues of procedures, dates, deadlines etc., but failure to prepare for and get the most from face-to-face supervisory meetings is often a key reason for failed dissertations. If the work fails with a grade of 39% or below, then there is no resit opportunity.

There is another reason for the need to have at least four face-to-face meetings with your supervisor: if your supervisor reports that only one or two face-to-face meetings have occurred, you will be required to attend a Viva before we can assess the work. And not being in the country is not accepted as a reason for not having a viva. In essence, a viva is a one hour face-to-face examination of your dissertation with two members of staff.

To maximise your chances of success, and to make the research process clearer and simpler, and to avoid having to attend for a viva, please ensure you have at least four face-to-face meetings with your supervisor. Please remember, it is important to work effectively with your supervisor as they will mark your work.
