Brief Description of Assessment Task:

Students are required to prepare a literature review on

“Cancer drugs and the impact on the development of a profitable pharmaceutical sector”.

Based on peer reviewed scientific literature, including original scientific articles. Peer reviewed review articles may be used as a basis to guide students to appropriate articles and as sources that summarise key findings. All references must be appropriately cited in text and listed in the required format using the UoB Harvard system of referencing available here:

Each topic requires up to date articles to be reviewed, in addition to older articles which reported key findings in the selected area.

Clarity of English language and presentation is essential throughout.

What do I need to do to pass?

Unit learning outcomes This assessment report principally assesses core learning outcomes 1 and 2:

1. Students will understand how drugs are synthesised and the role of medicinal chemistry in the commercial dimension of the pharmaceutical sector.
2. Students will develop skills in correlating the structure of organic compounds to routes to their synthesis and to their physico-chemical properties.

Undertake a substantial investigation of the peer-reviewed literature to identify and select relevant materials on an agreed research topic.

• Provide a detailed account of how the scientific principles revealed in the module bears on the development of a profitable pharmaceutical sector.
• Critique the role of commercial pressures on the pharmaceutical business.

How do I produce high quality work that merits a good grade?

The report must contain at the top of the first page: your student number, the unit code and assignment number, and the word count (excluding references). The main body of the review should contain the following:

Introduction to the topic – including explicit statements of drug discovery and in particular development of cancer drugschallenges and trends in pharmaceutical industry related to that scientific process from the target identification to medicine; and the impact on the development of a profitable pharmaceutical sector; and the aims and objectives;

Main body text: Six or more sections on different findings with respect to cancer drugs and the impact on the development of a profitable pharmaceutical sector. Try to focus here on target identification and any medicinal chemistry application during lead optimization stage on the process of cancer drug discovery, include development process and the impact on the development of a profitable pharmaceutical sector. Critique the commercial pressures on the cancer drug development. Include at least twenty peer-reviewed original research articles published in period 2010-2021. Review articles may be used as a basis to guide you to appropriate primary research and as sources that summarises key findings;
